Hacienda Zuleta

Hacienda Zuleta is a 17th-century hotel situated on a working farm in the spectacular landscape of the Andean mountain range in Ecuador. Accommodation consists of beautifully decorated en-suite rooms with quaint private gardens, cosy fireplaces, expansive living spaces and stunning views of the garden and mountain. The colonial-era working farm belonged to the family of Galo Plaza Lasso, a former president of Ecuador, for over a hundred years.

Explore breath-taking trails that lead to nearby lakes and mountain vistas, on the back of one of hacienda’s own breed of horse. Amenities include satellite television, wi-fi, movies and games as well as soft drinks and bar service. Guests can enjoy dining at the in-house restaurant which serves delicious home-style Ecuadorian cuisine cooked from fresh produce sourced from the Hacienda farm.

Hacienda Zuleta

Hacienda Zuleta enjoys the temperate climate of Ecuador’s Avenue of Volcanoes – as well as views of its incredible landscape. The weather is warm and pleasant, with showers from December to June. From July to September, the temperature increases and the climate is drier. The second half of the year often consists of clear night skies that are perfect for guests to share drinks around the fire.

The Hacienda is about 2 hours North East of Ecuador’s capital, Quito. As the roads from Quito can be difficult, the Hacienda is able to assist with the arrangement of a private vehicle. Google Maps doesn’t support the Zuleta area, so if driving yourself please visit the website for routes and further information.

Zuleta for Kids

The Galo Plaza Lasso Foundation

The Galo Plaza Lasso Foundation, run by the hacienda, supports several community projects that focus on education, infrastructure, tradition and conservation. This is aided by the generous donations of guests and partners.

Among examples of the foundation’s success are the Condor Huasi endangered species facilities, the Zuleta Embroidery Project and the Zuleta Library, all of which contribute to the wellbeing of Zuleta and its residents.

The Galo Plaza Lasso Foundation

Set up in 1995, the Galo Plaza Lasso Foundation has three fundamental goals – the first is to protect and care for the environment.

Their flagship environmental project is the Condor Huasi Project, aiming to support the rehabilitation of this critically endangered species. It cares for condors that have been mistreated in captivity and houses a group of condors in an aviary that provides food and shelter. The project aims to create contact between wild and semi-captive birds for reproduction and to reintroduce the species into the wild.

The foundation has also begun a project monitoring the population of Andean (spectacled) bears in the surrounding paramo landscape.

Farm to Plate

The majority of food served at Hacienda Zuleta comes from the farm and organic gardens themselves, which produce dairy products, wheat, barley, trout, mutton, vegetables, fruit, herbs and spices. This leads to meals that are not only unique and authentic, but don’t cost the earth.

Children Welcome

Hacienda Zuleta is child-friendly, not only welcoming younger visitors but providing a programme of activities for them if desired. Infants 3 and under stay for free.
