Tierra Patagonia

The Torres del Paine national park is located within Chilean Patagonia in the South of Chile, and is a “bucket-list” destination for many travellers due to its stunning scenery and wildlife. The three ancient “torres” (towers) carved from granite during the ice age are an imposing sight to behold – not to mention the abundance of rivers and lakes, and the magnificent mountains and glaciers ready to be explored. Between beautiful wildflowers and magnificent tall trees, expect viewings of guanacos, foxes, pumas and the endangered Chilean Huemul, as well as over 15 birds of prey.

The Tierra Patagonia hotel sits on the shores of Lake Sarimento, enclosed by evergreen shrubs and just 25 minutes from the Torres del Paine National Park entrance. It is a one hour and twenty minute scenic drive along Route 9 from the seasonally open Puerto Natales airport, or four hours from the Punta Arenas airport which is open year round.

Tierra Patagonia uses locally sourced ingredients to create delicious Chilean cuisine, with a diverse menu catering to all tastes, preferences and diets. The skilled on-site chef uses seafood from the Straits of Magellan and the Beagle Canal, meat from local ranches and calafate and myrtle berries harvested from the surrounding pampas to creative imaginative and tasty meals of the same quality of the city centre restaurants – in the tranquillity of Tierra’s remote location and with the Patagonian steppe unfolding outside.

The circular bar makes for an equally relaxed space to enjoy some of Chile’s famously exquisite wines, as well as sampling a collection of local beers and even the signature “Calafate Sour”, with a distinct flavour unique to Patagonia.

Uma Spa

The Uma Spa is a wellness hub surrounded by Patagonian wilderness, where guests have an impressive choice of facilities to relax and unwind during their stay. These include the serene heated indoor pool with glass panels and an open-air whirlpool tub, both providing spaces to relax while admiring the views outside or even spotting local fauna wandering up to the lodge. A wide array of treatments and therapies are available that use all-natural ingredients and promote positive thoughts and well-being, while the yoga studio and relaxation rooms complete with locally sourced wood and stone offer zen-like spaces designed to help open up your “prana”.

Architecture and Design

Chilean architect Cazú Zegers was assigned the role of designing the stunning Tierra Patagonia lodge, who’s architectural vision takes sustainability and authenticity into account. The building’s silhouette is inspired by the wind and creates a cohesive feel with the natural surroundings and the utilisation of local materials such as the washed lenga wood matches the feel of other buildings throughout the region. The interior design interpolates Patagonian culture, artefacts and hand crafted pieces from across the region, including “history windows” and dioramas made by Chilean artist Matilda Huidobro.

During construction landscape artists Catalina Phillips and Gerardo Ariztía removed all on-site vegetation, keeping it safe in a greenhouse before replanting it around the hotel. This effort to preserve local flora has paid off, in that the famous fauna of Patagonia remains undisturbed; guests can expect sights of the Guanacos, ñandús, native birds and foxes who call the surrounding area their home. A carefully constructed path leads to Lake Sarmiento without harming any plant life along the way.

Conservation and Community

As part of Tierra’s sustainability commitments, they value local heritage and culture and partner with like-minded foundations. The hotel works with the Chilean Tourist Board and Forestry Association to support a reforestation project that aims to plant one million trees across the national parks of Chilean Patagonia. In addition to offering financial and logistical support, the hotel raises awareness of the reforestation cause among guests and residents alike. They offer a reduced accommodation rate through partners Smartrip Foundation who support local community and culture while limiting urbanisation.

Tierra Patagonia aims to conserve electricity and has implemented LED lighting and controlled its thermal efficiency to reduce energy usage. There are plans for future renewable energy projects and “farm-to-table” dining initiatives. Their sustainability commitments include respecting and protecting biodiversity, such as through reforestation initiatives and taking the flora into account during construction, among other policies such as energy and water conservation and reducing waste and pollution.
