Take the short trip to visit Dambulla Cave Temple and see Sri Lanka’s largest and best-presented cave temple complex for yourself. Over five caves, visitors can marvel at to 153 statues and many paintings related to Gautama Buddha and his life. It is a real treasure trove of Sri Lankan history.
If you fancy venturing into some of Sri Lanka’s many natural spaces visit the Wasgamuwa National Park, which was created as a refuge and site of protection for displaced wild animals. This national park is one of the places Sri Lanka’s elephants can be seen in great herds, roaming the grassland. Also see if you can spot some of Sri Lanka’s many endemic bird species that can be seen in the park, including the Yellow-fronted Barbet and the Painted Stalk.
If you’re interested of Sri Lanka’s rich and diverse history, a trip to Nalanda Gedige is a must! Originally constructed between the 8th and 10th centuries using Dravidian architecture, the temple is now a curious hybrid of Buddhist and Hindu design, and a gem for the culturally curious.
