Excursion

If you fancy a bigger adventure take part in the five hour Rainforest Eco Lodge excursion. After breakfast, trek to the temples of Kolawenigama and Gatabaruwa over a distance of 75km, stopping at waterfalls on the way. This takes approximately five hours, but does promise spectacular views and unforgettable experiences in the rich Sinharaja Rainforest.

Community Development

At the time the Eco Lodge project began the resident tea worker community consisting of 37 families was marginalised, isolated and lived in extremely poor conditions. Imperative to the project was the immediate upgrade of the families’ facilities and living conditions, for the success of a long term strategy to empower them and provide opportunities.

The tea worker community are thought of as just as much an important part of the local environment as the wild inhabitants of the rainforest. That is why the Eco Lodge has worked in partnership with the community since the very beginning. Employment, skill development and outreach work all comprise the way in which the Eco Lodge aids the community, and in turn provides a sustainable tourism destination.

Responsible Tourism

Keeping in mind the unique richness of Sri Lanka’s biodiversity, the Rainforest Eco Lodge is a benchmark of ecotourism. The Lodge has been independently evaluated for environmental and socio-economic sustainability with the intention of formulating an international standard for ecotourism in Sri Lanka. Not only this but the entire Lodge is built from recycled materials and sustainably harvested bamboo.

All of this is with the protection of the Sinharaja Rainforest and its protection in mind. Neighbouring the forest and providing trails into it, the Lodge has the unique opportunity to increase awareness and education among its guests about the need to protect these kinds of habitats.
