Alcázar de Colón

Visit the artefacts and exhibits on show at the Alcázar de Colón, the home of Diego Columbus, the son the Christopher Columbus. A must see is the tapestry collection, which spans 15th to 17th century pieces, and contains beautiful cloths which are incredibly unique to the Caribbean. While there is so much to look around inside, even the building itself is a beautiful site to see!

Eduardo Brito National Theatre

Surrounded by the museums and shops of the Plaza de le Cultura stands the beautiful Eduardo Brito National Theatre. Hosting operas, ballet and musical performances throughout the year, this is the perfect way to spend an evening in Santo Domingo!

 

Monastery of San Francisco

There are so many historical sights to behold simply walking around the colonial zone of Santo Domingo, and the Monastery of San Francisco is no exception. Built by Franciscan friars in 1508, the ruins of the towering arches and beautiful brickwork remain today as a reminder of the rich history that fills Santo Domingo’s cobbled streets. Today, as well as a historical attraction, it is also the sight of open-air music and theatre events.

Global Code of Ethics for Tourism

Hodelpa Nicolas de Ovanda and all nine of the Hodelpa’s hotels have signed the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism which is a framework designed to help hotelier’s provide responsible and sustainable tourism. The ten principles set out in the Code include a commitment to sustainable growth that keeps in touch with the local community, and an encouragement of community inclusion in every aspect of tourism. It also decrees that the rights of staff, to fair salary and working conditions.

Keeping in line with the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism, Hodelpa recognise the need for tourism as an industry to be guardians of the environment and historic landmarks, respecting the natural heritage of locations. This means a commitment to improving waste production and management across all Hodelpa properties. This way the beauty of the Dominican Republic, and the wonderful cultural and historical heritage of the Colonial Zone can be protected.
