When the Puntacana Resort & Club was first built forty five years ago, the concept of sustainable development didn’t really exist, but, the resort has always made its choices “based on a deep respect for the Dominican Republic, its people, and it’s incredible natural resources”. Many of these choices and directions have meant the resort is recognised as a site for sustainable tourism, and has earned it numerous awards.

The resorts own non-profit Fundación Grupo Puntacana was formed in 1994, with the aim of find and promoting sustainable methods of tourism. The foundation also hosts and helps a great variety of community and environmental projects, from coral reef restoration programs to co-managing the Rural Clinic of Veron, providing primary care to thousands of people each year. The work of the resort’s foundation is extensive and ongoing, and it is a shining light in the movement towards sustainable, community-focused tourism.

All vegetables prepared in Tortuga Bay’s restaurants are grown in the resort’s own organic gardens, which means you can tuck into delectable dishes knowing exacting where the produce came from!

As part of the work of the Fundació Grupo Puntacana, Tortuga Bay and the Puntacana Resort & Club have implemented a program to redesign the resort under the principle of zero waste. Through environmental education programs, composting, recycling and waste management the resort is on the road to zero waste!
