Kiri Camp

Kiri Camp owes its name to the Kiri channel which flows passed the island on which the camp is situated – between the Boro River and the Kiri River, about 20km’s south-west of Chiefs Island. The camp is raised on wooden decks, providing astonishing vistas over the expansive Kiri floodplains which stretch out north of the camp. Kiri Camps luxury tented units benefit from their location beneath the surrounding ebony forest, facilitating cool and airy accommodation shaded from the extremes of midday heat. Kiri Camp benefits from its unique location within the NG32 Concession, not only for the bountiful game viewing and water-bound activities inherent to its location, but for the additional activities permitted to the private concession such as spotlight lit evening game drives.

Education and Empowerment

Machaba Safaris provide support for the Main Camp Primary School, located in a remote village that borders the Hwange National Park. This support includes providing teacher’s wages, facilities, textbooks and a new solar-powered computer lab. They also built the first Gonnye Sethlare Preschool in May 2019 which provides education for 36 children, and there are plans to build more of these education centres in other locations that Machaba Safaris work in. Their youth development plan gives young men and women the chance to gain work experience, and youths are given the necessary training to become lodge managers.

Conservation Protection

Machaba Safaris work with local stakeholders and communities in order to safeguard the crucial ecosystems that exist in Botswana and Zimbabwe. They provide educational programmes and talks in order to teach how humans and wildlife can coexist, as well as giving aid to anti-poaching patrols within the NG32 zone.

Supporting Infrastructure

Machaba Safaris work to identify infrastructural needs within the communities and countries that they operate in, continually striving to increase the scope of operations through the implementation of innovative and cutting-edge community programmes. This includes providing water to vulnerable communities, establishing sustainable vegetable gardens, putting up animal-proof fencing, and building homes for impoverished families.

Cleaner Energy Production

At Kiri Camp, as with other Machaba Safaris lodges, the pursuit of eco-friendly alternatives stands at the forefront of all operations. The introduction and facilitation of solar powered hybrid energy production has transformed the way in which Kiri Camp conducts itself within the ecotourism industry. The decision to deviate from the sole use of conventional diesel-powered generators and incorporate more sustainable, eco-friendly alternatives has not only a profoundly positive impact on the immediate environment and ecosystem, but on the credentials of the eco-tourism industry collectively. While there’s always room for further improvement and innovation, steps such as those taken at Kiri Camp set a benevolent path for future operations.

Low Energy Consuming Devices

Machaba Safaris lodges consistently strive to go above and beyond with regards to eco-friendly initiatives and innovations with the sole purpose of mediating the carbon footprint inherent to its operations. One such initiative is the implementation of low energy consuming appliances within its in-camp facilities such as energy saving light bulbs and innovative water treatment systems. Kiri Camp forgoes the use of certain appliances that excessively and inefficiently require energy such as hairdryers and air-conditioning units, opting for alternative means instead.

For example, a comfortable room temperature is maintained within Kiri Camp accommodation using sustainable, locally sourced construction materials such as canvas and thatch, ensuring a pleasant temperature regardless of the extreme heat and cold inherent to the environment.

Eco Friendly Architecture

Machaba Safaris lodges are built with an ever-present consciousness for the environment at the forefront of operations. By utilising locally sourced, recyclable and biodegradable materials, retreats such as Kiri Camp pose little detrimental effects to the environment in which they operate. Negating the need to haul industrial quantities of construction materials and lumber long distances through vast habitats and ecosystems serves to maintain the ecological equilibrium desired within such operations.

Furthermore, the implementation of such eco-friendly architectural practices allows for the swift and complete recovery of all land used in the construction of Machaba Safaris properties, allowing the land to heal in as little as 1.5 years.

Waste Management Initiatives

Waste management operations undertaken at Machaba Safaris properties like Kiri Camp adhere to strict ecological standards and sustainable measures. It’s crucial to ensure that all waste products are appropriately treated to protect the surrounding environment from unnatural, ecological distress. Once processed using in-camp bio-plant facilities, the product poses little detriment to the environment, offsetting carbon emissions and promoting cutting-edge sanitary upkeep.

Children Welcome

Kiri Camp Welcomes families with children of all ages. However, due to the potentially hazardous and sometimes unpredictable nature of the environment, children must be always accompanied by an adult. There are no babysitting facilities available.

‘Children aged 5 years and younger stay free, children 6-11 pay standard child rate (50% of adult sharing rate). Children 12+ pay full adult rate.
