“At Kura, we believe the concept of “local” is key to sustainable hospitality. That’s why we hire local and buy local, and make sure that our community and natural surroundings are well taken care of. We hire exclusively Costa Rican staff from the local area. Many come from humble beginnings and we invest heavily in their training and professional development. Many hotels in the area lay off a high percentage of their staff during low season. But we provide ours with year round employment and plenty of opportunities for growth. That’s why we also make sure every member of staff at Kura has access to a company doctor in Uvita. For a nominal fee of just US$1.5 per month, all healthcare consultations are free of charge for them and their children.
Most things in the hotel, from the spa to the food enjoyed in the Kura Restaurant are sourced from close to the hotel. Much of the restaurant food comes from just around the corner and room minibars are stocked with local drinks and snacks. On site their is also an Organic Garden Greenhouse with a Japanese Takakura composting system. Here the vegetables and herbs used in the restaurant are grown. There are no pesticides involved either.
In addition to this, 100% spa products and bathroom amenities are Costa Rican as well as the Bourca masks decorating the hotel which come from a local tribe. Continuing to maintain their philosophy Teak wood is used throughout the hotel due to it’s fast growing nature and that it is considered a sustainable building material. It doesn’t require wood finishers or any harsh chemicals.
Kura will give you a complimentary tour of how they keep the hotel sustainable, from their;
- Organic cleaning products- No dangerous chemicals and 100% biodegradable.
- Green gardening- The hotel put wastewater to good use by purifying it onsite through a special biological system. Due to the climate of Costa Rice a few months of the year the rainforest becomes completely dry. In order to ease the demand on fresh water they use this waste water.
- Salt water pool- Unlike most hotel pools Kura provides a special chemical and filter system that uses salt to keep the waters clean. Kind for the skin as you won’t be exposed to harsh chemicals.
- Solar Panels- Solar technology heats water for the guest suites and staff rooms, keeping carbon emissions as low as possible.
- Banished all single use plastic- Kura encourage guests to use the reusable bottles available at the hotel. They have also replaced single-use plastic straws with locally-made bamboo stalks. They’re compostable which helps reduce the amount of non-recyclable waste produced the hotel.
Kura’s surrounding areas are blessed with beautiful beaches. So nature conservation is a key part of Kura’s sustainable philosophy. They believe we have a duty towards our surroundings and environment. The shores of the Marino Ballena National Park are some of the cleanest in all of southern Costa Rica. They’ve been awarded the national Ecological Blue Flag award in recognition. The hotel support the local groups that have been set up to make sure the beaches hold onto this title. They create presentations around town and in local schools, teaching the community how to keep our ecosystems healthy.
