Leopard Hills Private Game Lodge

Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve has been in existence as a game reserve since around the 1950s, this 65,000-hectare reserve shares an unfenced border with the Kruger National Park, meaning the animals of both the reserve and national park roam freely between the two, and creates one of the most biodiverse wildlife populations in Africa. A diverse range of landscapes is the home to many magnificent animals, with stretches of grassland, thick areas of woodland, emerald watering holes, winding rivers and endless horizons sheltering the big five; elephant, buffalo, rhino, lion and leopard as well as giraffe, hyena, zebra, cheetah and hippos. This game reserve is also a birders paradise, with the red-billed pecker, black-bellied bustard and comb duck all filling the sky with their songs.

Conservation

Leopard Hills is aware of the role in which it plays in regards to the protection of the local environment. “Responsible management techniques” are used which help to conserve the environment so future generations may enjoy its wonders.

Striving to be a leading sustainable safari lodge in South Africa, Leopard Hills is committed to achieving “sound environmental practices”, such as minimising their waste by recycling and reusing, and using renewable energy sources, as opposed to fossil fuel-based energy resources, to help reduce their carbon footprint.

All environmental codes of conduct are complied with, and all staff are trained and given the resources to help “meet these objectives.” Contractors, supplies and guests of the lodge are encouraged to help in Leopard Hills’s “efforts to protect the environment.”

Community

With access to early years child care and education at a minimum, Leopard Hills has built a daycare centre for orphans and underprivileged children in the area. Sufficient funds have been raised by guests for the successful building of a “new facility in the local village.” Guests have donated clothing, writing materials, blankets and books which has helped the children in their learning and quality of life.

Leopard Hills strives to make a positive impact in the local communities, which is why this project is so important to them. Partnered with the Good Work Foundation (GWF) – who are an NGO “focused on digital learning opportunities for young adults and scholars living in rural communities” – Leopard Hills has helped to launch a “digital learning campus” in a nearby village. This digital learning campus is the “latest addition to a collection of five digital learning campuses in Mpumalanga” which provide training and skills to the local people.
