In the Makgadikgadi region there are multiple pans, of which the Nwetwe Pan is one the largest, and San Camp enjoys sweeping views across this pan. The Makgadikgadi Pans were once an enormous lake that covered a large proportion of southern Africa, today it is completely dry, leaving one of the biggest salt pans in Africa in its wake.

Explore one of Africa’s largest zebra population making these vast white pans their home and experience countless adventurous activities within the pan. Enjoy game drives in a 4×4 safari vehicles and view the unique desert wildlife, spot lions, honey badgers, buffalos, elephants and many more. Spend time with the cheeky meerkats as you embark on a walking safari. For a more thrilling experience enjoy a session of quad biking as you travel across the salt pan. Bushmen walk will allow you to interact with Zu’hoasi bushmen and gain insight into their ancient culture. A unique adventure!

Activities

Bushmen Walk

For a unique and memorable experience you have the opportunity to head out on a walk with the local Zu’hoasi Bushmen. San Camp has worked together with the locals to create an educative and respectful guided walk, where you will learn about their heritage and culture. The Zu’Hoasi Bushmen will also be able to impart their knowledge of the surrounding flora and fauna.

Walking with Meerkats

For a truly memorable experience you can head on a guided walk to the local meerkat hotspot. Observe as the tiny meerkats scuttle and scurry around as they look for scorpions and other tasty treats. These meerkats are used to human presence so this is one of the best ways to experience them in their natural habitat. Walks will take place from sunrise and you will be accompanied by one of the camp’s trained guides.

Game Drives

Make the most of your days at San Camp and embark on a game drive across the Makgadikgadi Pans in an open sided 4×4 safari vehicle. Cover a vast amount of land on these trips, and as you journey across the plains keep an eye out for zebras in the distance, bat-eared foxes, and if you’re lucky, the occasional lion.

The rare species of brown hyena call this area their home, and guests can marvel at the arid desert landscapes while keeping their eyes peeled for hyenas. Your guide will be able to teach interesting facts about the animals which live on the pans so you will return from these drives with more than wildlife sightings, but also a knowledge of the region.

For those who are looking for a tad more adrenaline, morning quad bikes rides across the Makgadikgadi Pans are available to guests.
