Located in Southern Madagascar, Bakuba Lodge is surrounded by the pristine and luscious nature that Madagascar is well-known for. Situated in luscious gardens, Bakuba sits on a rugged coastline and is surrounded by bushveld and wilderness. A collection of colours creates a unique landscape, from the red soil, azure ocean, green grasses and vivid forests. Close by Bakuba Lodge is the Tsinjoriake Protected Area, which offers unique experiences to explore the stunning nature. Travellers can climb mountains to be rewarded with panoramic views of the wilds, and can wander through the green grasses keeping an eye out for animals and ecosystems. A population of pink flamingoes call Tsinjoriake their home, as well as lemurs, chameleons, geckos, tomato frogs and endemic bird species, such as the small bright orange Madagascar Fody.

There is a choice of three rooms at Bakuba Lodge. All the rooms are authentic, giving off a rustic atmosphere enhanced by raw materials, such as exposed walls and wooden furniture which keeps guests grounded in nature. The rooms are spacious and bright, with natural light filling the room through wide windows. In the centre of the rooms sits a comfortable double bed which is covered in crisp white bed linen and draped in soft mosquito netting. All rooms include an ensuite bathroom which includes a walk-in shower. Terraces sit to the front of the rooms and offer sweeping views of the amazing natural beauty which surrounds the lodge.
Lukengo and Afrik rooms can be configured with a double or twin beds, with Afrik coming with the possibility of adding a cot for a child up to 2 years of age. Tembo room comes complete with a double bed, but also the possibility of adding an extra cot.
The suites are filled with rustic African authenticity, with elegant touches visible in the furnishings. All the suites are spacious and come with a separate seating area, perfect for guests to relax in after a long day. Comfortable double beds are covered in crisp white bed linen and come swathed in mosquito netting. All the suites come with an en-suite bathroom and a patio or balcony. Begin or finish your day by spending time on your terrace, gazing over the panoramic views and watching the beautiful colours of sunrise or sunset.
Masai suite can accommodate up to two adults and two children and comes complete with a view of the colourful garden. Totems suite can accommodate one child and one cot, and comes with a view of the sparkling sea. Uele suite can accommodate two adults and one child and offers views across the luscious gardens and glistening sea in the distance.
Guests can dine on the terrace overlooking the magnificent Table Mountain which rises in the distance, and can enjoy refreshing breakfasts, light lunches, and delectable dinner which are all made by talented chefs with fresh, local, and seasonal ingredients. Head to the bar for a creative cocktail before or after dinner, as well as a selection of wines and beers.
There are many things guests can do and see in the beauty surrounding Bakuba Lodge. Journeys in a 4×4 vehicle through the wilds of Tsinjoriake can be arranged, allowing guests to travel through the grasses in comfort. Guides will be able to drive you to all the best viewing spots for nature photography and animal sightings.
Canoeing trips down the river Onilahy can be organised for guests, who can enjoy gliding along the sparkling river immersing themselves in their surroundings and keeping an eye on the banks for wading birds and colourful reed frogs.
Various trekking trails are available for guests who wish to get out and explore on their own two feet. Wander at your own pace through the wilderness, and follow easy to moderate trails such as the Moringa path which will lead you to caves where thirsty lemurs stop for an afternoon drink.
One of the marvels of the Tsinjoriake Protected Area is the Table Mountain. Guests can spend the day trekking to the top of this marvel of nature and be rewarded with 360° panoramic views of the stunning surroundings – the luscious grasslands, mopane forests and sparkling ocean in the distance.
A great day’s activity is a visit to the nearby Antsokay Arboretum. This colourful and unique botanical garden contains over 900 plant species for guests to marvel at, including 90% of which are endemic to Madagascar. Wander through at your own pace, taking in the sights, smells, and sounds of this luscious corner of Madagascar.
