The Explorer's Bar

The Explorer’s Bar is the meeting place of guides for planning explorations. Stocked with liquor and Chilean wines, the bar is frequently the meeting point of returning groups at nightfall to relax and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere.

Easter Island is a place that contains mysteries that are waiting to be revealed by explorers of all times, and that’s where travelers are taken to discover all its corners. With over 30 explorations, either on foot, bike riding or on a boat, travelers are offered a deep exploration experience that includes visiting places that are even unknown to some locals and feeling the history of the Rapa Nui culture with its landscape and archeological remains.

Ever since Explora has been founded the concept of sustainability and conservancy was already meant to be its core. In 1993, when explore first opened its doors to the travel community, they had successfully laid down the groundwork for a Sustainability & Conservancy Program. Explora specifically refer to this stage as “groundwork” because from then onward, over the past 20 years, sustainability and conservancy have become not only their backbone, but also their eyes, their hands and most importantly their brain, permeating every single aspect of explora’s operation and growing into an independent force of its own. The Program itself is based on two pillars which work under the same corporate dream of developing a model in which travelers can interact with nature, whilst proactively working towards participative natural and cultural conservation.

Recycling & Waste Management

Explora perform conscientious treatments of all waste material generated throughout the its operations by separating, compacting and stockpiling each kind of material for its donation to local initiatives such as permaculture and recycling. In the case of Rapa Nui, explora works hand in hand with the Oritos Recycling Plant following a highly demanding waste-management plan. Organic Waste is used at their Atacama hotel through a compost process. Moreover, the team at the hotel is committed to generating as much compost and humus as possible, in order to be used on the grounds they use to feed their horses.

Power & Water efficiency

At Explora, architecture and design are very important, not only because it truly determine its travelers’ experience, but also because they are designed to maximize the use of natural light, which is added to low-consumption lighting systems. Hence, allows explora to optimize the use of electric power throughout their operation. In regards to water resources, explora are aware of the importance of water as a natural resource, and of the costs and impacts behind its use. Therefore, in order to comply with both international and  environmental standards as well as their own, each explora hotel has a rigorous water purification and treatment plant.

Non- invasive explorations

Explora guides are trained to lead explorations that have no impact whatsoever on the areas to which they introduce their travelers, always respecting the fragility of each eco-system.

Support & Involvement with local communities: Terevaka Outreach Program

Brett Shepardson is an internationally renowned archeologist that has spent over 10 years working on archeological research projects of no environmental impact on the island of Rapa Nui. After years of research, he developed an alliance with schools on the island to carry out a 2-week workshop with young local volunteers, called “The Terevaka Archeological Outreach” (TAO). In 2013, explora joined Brett Shepardson’s program, which enabled him to do this workshop along with explora staff, setting up a campsite in the hotel grounds, allowing 15 young local volunteers to participate for 2 weeks, and live the explora experience. Among the resulting research, they gathered important information on the petro glyphs that surround the hotel grounds, and managed to geo-reference many valuable archeological spots through GPS technology. The workshop is planned to take place again in the following years.
