Environmental conservation

Anantara believes in water and energy conservation throughout their hotels as well as waste management. Initiatives are in place to ensure that specific goals are met, such as reducing energy consumption by at least ten percent and purchasing the most energy-efficient lighting. Water is conserved on the island through the installation of low-flow showers and sink aerators. Waste management at Anantara follows local guidelines but they also know that more can be done. Anantara has its own composting programme and only purchases products that are both durable and easy to repair and recycle.

Social and cultural conservation

By working in partnership with local communities, programmes are in place to offer local artisans and performers opportunities within the hotel. Employing locally empowers the community as does sourcing locally, reducing air miles and providing business to local fishermen and farmers when possible. By integrating indigenous culture into the resort’s experience Anantara is raising awareness and the importance of employing local people wherever possible. Anantara encourages guests to participate in efforts and learn how food is sourced locally in the gardens as well as how it is prepared in collaboration with specialist chefs.

Beyond Horizons video series

A series of mini documentaries have been created in collaboration with marine biologists and conservationists who do vital work that protects the wildlife and marine life across Anantara’s resorts. The videos that feature the Maldives centre round the work done to protect the coral life and sea turtles. Involving guest who visit, the video provide a further outreach of education in the work that they do and how their money is well spent in aid of such projects.

Anantara works hard to preserve their destinations and contributes to social and environmental projects in each country they operate by actively supporting local communities. Anantara believes in reef protection more specifically in the Maldives, protecting coral and the surrounding organisms. The team work with experts to restore coral that has been bleached and damaged and allow guests to play an active role in its protection. The HARP approach allows a team to start restoring and growing the colonies of coral and guests are invited to witness this coral being grown, aided by funding provided by Anantara alongside the ‘Dollar for Deeds’ foundation which involves both guests and the Maldives resorts.

HARP foundation

The HARP foundation is an initiative aided by the finding of Anantara Kihavah and its resorts. It stands for ‘Holistic Approach to Reef Protection’ and is a non-invasive method of re-growing damaged coral colonies, allowing guests to aid in the replanting process. In collaboration with HARP is an initiative called ‘Dollars for Deeds’, giving guest the option of donating 1 USD for each night they stay at the resort, which is then matched by the hotel.

Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation

This foundation funds programmes to rescue turtle eggs from surrounding beaches. Given to the Phuket Marine Biological Centre and Royal Thai Navy, they provide a safe environment for the eggs to hatch before helping them find their way to sea once strong enough. Involving guests in this project aids the foundation whilst giving them the opportunity to explore and rescue the marine life in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Guests are welcomed to help release turtles back into the ocean whilst educating them on the programmes in place. The foundation focuses on reef cleaning, beach cleaning, tree planting and education within the community to ensure that the natural beauty is preserved for future generations.

Straw initiative

Anantara is hoping to start a movement that eradicates single-use plastic from their resorts and have begun doing so with the ‘sustainable straw initiative’. An initiative that began in Asia, Anantara employed a local artist named Khamchan Yano who introduced the resort to a fast-growing bamboo that could be used and reused as natural straws at the hotels. As plastic is one of the main polluters of the oceans and the marine life, something Anantara is committed to protecting, they are hoping to inspire other resorts as well as guests themselves.

Family friendly

Anantara Kihavah is child friendly and welcomes families looking to travel in the Maldives, with residences that can house up to six children and six adults available
