Just a 5-minute drive from Chalets Chamarel is where you’ll find The Seven Coloured Earth. Discover the Coloured Earth, a natural phenomenon, and a prominent tourist fascination, becoming one of Mauritius’ main tourist attractions since the 1960s.
The colours seen are evolved through the conversion of basaltic lava to clay minerals. The sand dunes are comprised of seven distinct colours, such as red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple, and yellow. The colours never erode in spite of torrential downpours and adverse climatic conditions. The best time to see this spectacular natural attraction is at sunrise.
Nowadays, the dunes are protected by a wooden fence and visitors are not allowed to climb directly onto them, instead, there are observation outposts placed along the fence. However, curio shops in the area sell small test tubes filled up with the sand of the coloured earth allowing you to take a piece of this phenomenon home with you.
