All Constance Hotels and Resorts have an innate care for their guests, the locations where their properties are located and more widely, a deep respect for the planet. High service and eco-friendliness are the aim for all Constance Hotels and Resorts, and they have even won awards for their efforts including The Green Globe Certification, of which they are now a Gold member.
Since 2013, and their embarkation on their environmental sustainability performance program, all operations aim to be sustainable and a positive contribution to ‘cultural heritage preservation and community development.’ Focus while at a Constance Hotel will always be on the guests’ well-being however sustainable and eco-friendly operations are always happening in the background, they are committed to preserving and protecting the environment.
Constance Hotels and Resorts (CHR) have four main areas of focus for their sustainability and eco-friendly practices. The first is their focus on environmental issues; they have an active engagement in conserving resources, biodiversity, ecosystems and landscapes, and reducing pollution by reducing their carbon footprint. The second is their work around their socio-cultural responsibility.
To help support the local community they support local businesses, employ members of the local village, support fair trade and have implemented a policy against commercial exploitation. CHR makes sure that their supplies are responsibly sourced, their hiring is equitable and then their staff are protected, and most importantly that their business ‘does not jeopardize the provision of basic services, such as water, energy or sanitation to neighbouring communities.’
The third focus is on quality. The quality of the activities they offer are decided by how well they can sustain themselves economically, the exceeding of guests’ expectations, and whether or it not it contributes to the local community’s economic wellbeing through employing local people, being owned locally and the use of local products.
Through all the emphasis on social responsibility and sustainability CHR also have a strong focus on health and safety. As a business they comply with Occupational Safety and Health legislation and regulations and make sure that every person on their premises and protected.
CHR recognises its ‘role and responsibilities in contributing to the sustainable development of the communities in which it operates.’ They actively support the local community by supporting various initiatives which aims to provide vocational training and develop skills, specifically regarding the tourism and hospitality sector. CHR takes on interns from local schools and offers them a job opportunity. They support small businesses that are locally owned to help ‘create economic growth’ and support the community in protecting their local environment.
Constance Belle Mare Plage respects the labour law and regulations. Employment of children, sexual harassment, and exploitation is strictly prohibited. They respect the local population and culture and international employees are made aware of local culture.
CHR have a commitment to carrying out all their operations in a sustainable way, ‘taking every step to minimise operational impact on, and preserve the environment.’ They make sure that in their operations they meet the current environmental legislations and deadlines, through maintaining high environmental standards.
Authentic experiences of the local area and environment are promoted through the preservation of the cultural and natural heritage of CHR’s properties. All their environmental targets are reviewed on a periodic basis to make sure they stay up to scratch, and environmental awareness is passed on to all guests, staff, suppliers and contractors, and members of the local community.
A high level of environmental awareness is promoted at CHR properties, awareness is maintained among the staff and guests ‘on environmental issues, preservation of local cultures and the necessity for everyone to act in a responsible manner.’ Various environmental initiatives are supported by staff members and their environmental commitment will be communicated to guests and the local communities.
Constance Belle Mare Plage encourages marine life conservation and supports the clean-up of the marine and coastal environment. They do this by ensuring none of their waste water is discharged into the ocean, complying with local policies such as promoting non-motorised water sports, offering diving and snorkelling activities which don’t negatively impact the coral reefs, educating staff and guests about the importance of leaving the beach clean and not littering, and planting trees to help reduce runoff into the oceans which contributes to ‘reversing the warming of our planet and the rising temperatures of our oceans.’
To help conserve their marine environment and the biodiversity of the area they are currently reducing their use of weed killers, increasing their use of organic fertilisers, using eco-friendly cleaning products, planting indigenous plants, planting trees, and not using animal or plant products from threatened or protected species.
As well as promoting more environmentally conscious practices, reducing the energy consumption of CHR properties will reduce energy costs and environmental impact. Various steps have been taken to make CHR more energy efficient, using renewable energy where possible such as solar power – which negates the use of fossil fuels – using low energy appliances and energy efficient equipment, using timers and sensors which help to regulate the consumption of energy as well as reducing the loss of energy with one example being them using insulated pipes to carry chilled or hot fluids. Progress for all these initiatives are monitored regularly and processes and improved where needs be.
CHR are always looking for ways to become more responsible and preserve resources when it comes to water. Water saving devices such as regulators and sensors have been installed, with employees and guests alike being educated on the importance of the responsible use of water.
Laundry equipment is used efficiently, and guests are offered the option of reusing towels and sheets to limit the amount of water that is used in washing. Rainwater is captured wherever possible to limit the use of freshwater, and recycled greywater is used for irrigation. Targets are set to help minimise CHR’s water usage and these are monitored periodically.
Recycling and reusing are strongly promoted throughout all CHR properties as they realise they contribute a large amount of waste. They have various initiatives to minimise the amount of waste they create such as limiting the use of disposable packaging, using biodegradable products, and limiting individual packaging of hygiene products. Some of their recycling initiatives include engaging with the local community and recycling projects, recycling cooking oil, organising the ‘recycling of materials such as paper/cardboard/glass/plastic packaging, metal cans, ink cartridges, restaurant organic waste and garden green waste.’
CHR purchase green products as much as possible such as seasonal and local produce, buying in bulk to reduce waste, purchasing from eco-friendly companies and prefer purchasing from ‘a source that is less polluting’ or ‘who use recycled packaging material.’
Constance Belle Mare Plage welcomes children and has rooms with space for children as well as a kids club for the children to spend time in taking part in exciting and enriching activities
