Marine biology

A resident marine biologist is on hand at Hurawalhi to teach you about the natural wonders of the ocean. With the opportunity to scuba dive and snorkel around the coral reefs you can witness rare marine life and watch it pass you by. Guests can get up close to sea turtles, Manta Rays and sharks in their natural habitat, learning about the fragility of the delicate ecosystems whilst doing so.

Food sustainability

Eco-consciousness is important to Hurawalhi and restaurants offer organic food at the resort. Produce is thoughtfully sourced, with a wide variety of food being grown at the resort itself in hydroponic greenhouses and open areas of land to eliminate air miles, carbon emissions and the need for packaging altogether.

Education

The resident marine biologist at Hurawalhi hosts workshops and offshore trips with guests who visit the resort to share their knowledge of the delicate ecosystems and how they are conserving such large areas.

Heat recovery system

The resort meets its hot water requirements through its high-efficiency system. Waste heat that is produced is converted into electrical energy, enabling guests to enjoy hot showers that do not have an impact on the environment.

Reducing plastic bottle waste

Committed to reducing the amount of plastic water bottles polluting the planet, the island resort provides glass bottles from their very own desalination plant. Fresh water is derived from the seawater through reverse osmosis before being mineralised and chilled for guests to enjoy. Having this plant on-site once again eliminates air miles and allows the whole resort to be catered to.

Marine biology centre

Hurawalhi is home to its very own marine biology centre with an in-house marine biologist. Its conservation efforts offer an understanding of the coral reefs and rare marine life. In partnership with the Manta Trust, biologists conduct research into the population numbers of Manta Rays and study reef ecology. By studying the encounters, biologists can improve tactics to protect them and in close cooperation with Prodivers Maldives, the resort is able to share this passion.

Solar energy

Due to the hot climate of the island’s location, harnessing solar energy is an obvious choice to be made. Solar panels are installed throughout the resort and is equipped with an amount that is equal to the size of 26 volleyball courts (4.102.5m2).
