The Jamaica Inn Foundation

The Jamaica Inn Foundation was created as a non-profit organisation to help benefit and support the people who live on the island of Jamaica. They provide “education and well-being support” to the youth of the island, and play a major role in the preservation of the marine environment and coral reefs. Supported by the Jamaica Inn Foundation is the White Fish Sanctuary Project and the Oracabessa Bay Turtle Project. The Jamaica Inn Foundation believes that working together can create “a better world so that the future is even brighter than the present.”

White River Fish Sanctuary

Coral reefs are a vital part of ocean life. Severe weather, sea urchin disease and over fishing have all led to an ‘85% reduction in coral coverage in the waters outside of Ocho Rios” since the 1970s. Even worse, is the decrease in the quantity and size of fish “by 600%”. The White River Fish Sanctuary was opened in partnership with Jamaica Inn after a plea for help from local fishermen.

The sanctuary has a range of roles. They have patrols and wardens who watch the local area from spear fishers, and are trained to talk to them “to get them on board.” This initiative has worked as there are no more spear fishers and the fish are recovering. All the wardens are trained as “coral gardeners” and are helping to implement and “5-year coral restoration” project, helping plant new coral.

Oracabessa Bay Turtle Project

The hawksbill sea turtle has been endangered since around 1970, with trade in hawksbill turtles continuing to this day. An important job is to make sure these turtles are protected and monitored, and this is what the Oracabessa Bay Turtle Project aims to do.

Mel Tennant, who is the project supervisor works with Jamaica Inn to “record data of nest hatchings.” So far the project has been a huge success and more than “100 nests and 16,000 hatchlings are being recorded yearly.” Turtle hatchings happen on the beach where Jamaica Inn is located so if guests are lucky they may catch a glimpse of the turtles hatching.

Teddy Tucker Scholarship Fund

Helping local families and children gain the “necessary skills, training and education” if they wish to pursue a career in the industry of Tourism or Hospitality is the main aim of the Teddy Tucker Scholarship Fund. Named after Herbert Tucker, known as “Teddy”, who was “the rock and foundation at the Inn for the past 62 years” Jamaica Inn aim to keep his legacy alive through this scholarship fund.
