La Hacienda Hotel, Vieux Grand Port, Mauritius
Located in the rolling foothills of Lion Mountain, La Hacienda is situated in the historical district of Vieux Grand Port. Steeped in colonial history, La Hacienda overlooks the bay which was the first port for the Dutch in 1598, and is a short journey away from the historical town of Mahébourg – the first settlement established by the French in 1721. Historical sites of interest can be found all around, from Naval Museums, Dutch ruins, to ancient colonial architecture, and travellers can spend their days exploring Mahébourg’s lively and colourful market, where fish, fruit, vegetables, fabrics and handicrafts can be purchased.
Not just filled with interesting history, Vieux Grand Port is renowned for its pristine and untouched natural beauty and biodiversity. Colourful and luscious flora lines the foothills, and endemic and native birds such as pink pigeons, kestrels, and wild-tailed tropicbirds fill the air with their song. Other animals which can be seen in this region are tenrecs, hares, and monkeys. Dense mangrove forests have worked to protect the biodiverse marine life, which can be viewed in the nearby Blue Bay Marine Park, where there are over 50 types of coral – as well as countless fish species including Surgeonfish, Trumpetfish, Pipefish, and Butterflyfish, to name a few!
Guests can access La Hacienda by flying into Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport from where a transfer to the villas can be arranged.
