Anuradhapura is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the ancient capitals of Sri Lanka, famous for its well-preserved ruins of an ancient Sinhala civilisation. This sacred city was established around a cutting from the ‘tree of enlightenment’, the Buddha’s fig tree.
Explore the ruins of Anuradhapura renowned for being one of South Asia’s most evocative sights. The sprawling complex contains a rich collection of archaeological and architectural wonders: enormous dagobas (brick stupas), ancient pools and crumbling temples, built during Anuradhapura’s thousand years of rule over Sri Lanka. Today, several of the sites remain in use as holy places and temples; frequent ceremonies give Anuradhapura a vibrancy that’s a sharp contrast to the museum-like ambience at Polonnaruwa.
Experience Mahamevnawa Gardens, an ancient garden which is situated in the sacred city of Anuradhapura. It was created by King Mutasiva during his reign from 367 – 307 BC. The king is renowned in Sri Lankan history as the first king who structured a park in the island. Many sacred religious sites are located at the gardens including the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, Ruwanweli Maha Seya, Thuparamaya and the Samadhi Buddha Statue.
Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi is a sacred fig tree located at Mahamevnawa, it is a significant religious site for Buddhists in Sri Lanka. Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi is believed to be the southern branch from the Sri Maha Bodhi in India, under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment. Consequently, it is given a very important place by Sri Lanka Buddhists which makes it one of the “Atamasthana” of Anuradhapura. Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi is regarded as the oldest living human-planted tree in the entire world.
