Dolphin Beach is around 2 hours from Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport, the Resort offers an airport shuttle for guests – they recommend calling ahead to confirm details. The Resort also comes with easy access to the neighbourhoods around the hotel through the convenient shuttle service offered at the hotel. For those who wish to drive their own cars, Dolphin Beach Resort has a car park on site, as well as additional parking nearby if the first car park is full. Parking is free for guests. If you’re looking for an easy way to get around Kalpitiya with private transportation, the hotel can arrange both taxis and car rental.

Standard Tents

The standard tents at Dolphin Beach Resort are 40 square meters, they provide a king-size double bed, a single sofa bed, veranda, and can comfortably sleep 3 guests. The Standard Tents also have their own en-suite toilet with hot water shower or additionally an outdoor shower. Each spacious room with gorgeous interiors has a private courtyard. Along with the upscale accommodation, enjoy amenities such as toiletries, hair dryer, shaving mirror, tea and coffee maker and much more.

Family Tents

Indulge yourself in a tropical vacation at one of the best family resorts in Sri Lanka. The family pavilions at Dolphin Beach Resort are 60 square meters, each featuring two bedrooms furnished with two options, one with a king-size bed and two single beds and the other option is two king-size beds. The tent can sleep up to six people in comfort if the sofa is used. Each tent has a private courtyard with gorgeous interiors, along with the upscale accommodation enjoy amenities such as toiletries, hair dryer, shaving mirror, tea and coffee maker and much more.

Dining at Dolphin Beach

The Dolphin Beach Resort offers a range of Sri Lankan food, though the speciality of the restaurant is Italian, with a wide selection of homemade pastas and wood fired pizzas on offer. Dolphin Beach pride themselves on serving fresh and locally sourced produce, you can enjoy the catch of the day or pre- book a succulent mud crab meal in advance – the nearby Puttalam Lagoon boasts of having the best crabs in Sri Lanka. Fresh grilled yellow fin tuna is also favourite with most that dine here.

Alankuda, which is just a few kilometres from Dolphin Beach, homes one of the two night markets in Sri Lanka, offering a wide range of fresh and traditional Sri Lankan produce. You can simply visit the market with the Chef and choose your own vegetables, to then be freshly prepared to your individual taste and served up for your evening meal.

Dolphin Watching

Watch massive pods of dolphins swimming alongside and diving under your boat. The most sort after species of dolphin to watch is the Spinner Dolphin because they constantly breach. Here in Alankuda you find them not in hundreds but in thousands particularly when the ‘super pod’ is formed.

You could spend an hour or two as they play with you and show off their aerobatic skills and not feel at all you are intruding on nature; they are such sociable mammals. Watching the playful dolphins will give you a greater understanding of the oceans around, and why we need to do all we can to protect it and these wonderful animals. Other species of Dolphins seen here at times are Bottlenose, Spotted, Striped, Humpback, Risso and Fraser.

Whale Watching

The deeper waters off Alankuda and Kalpitiya coastlines are the haunt of six types of whales. The biggest of Sri Lanka’s big five can be seen surfacing from time to time and the sight of these enigmatic cetaceans is both breath taking, spellbinding and offers a truly humbling experience.

Sperm Whales are most common, other Whales you could see include the Blue, Minke, Melon-Headed, Pilot, Brydes and Dwarf Sperm whales. The months of November and April are the best times for whale watching in Alankuda.

Cycling in Kalpitiya

Dolphin Beach Resort offers cycling tours and bicycles free of charge, allowing you to cycle around freely and explore the area at your own pace for an ultimate carefree and relaxing holiday. Cycling in and around Kalpitiya is the easiest way to discover all the wonders that adorn this fishing and farming village. The town was once an important fortified trading port and has an interesting mix of historic buildings to explore, the remnants from its colonial past. Be sure to check out the ancient ruins of the Dutch Fort and Old Dutch Church in town and learn of the country’s colonial influence.

Breeze past the gorgeous mangroves and take in their natural beauty. Enjoy the sight of palm-thatched roof huts and watch out for herds of wild asses that are common around Kalpitiya. The twists and turns of the roads will bring about an intensely pleasurable response to the scenic beauty and add to the excitement of your cycling adventure.

Kitesurfing at Alankuda Beach

Kalpitiya is the ultimate destination for windsurfing, so if you’re up for an adventure, this will be an ideal option for you. Kite in front of the Dolphin Beach Resort where you will have the best wind and wave conditions from May to October. Though, if you happen to get ‘bored’ of kiting in front of the Resort, there are options to do downwind with the instructor to the flat-water training area approximately 20 km away.

Puttalam Lagoon offers flat-water, 23 islands and borders Sri Lanka’s largest wildlife park. Excellent IKO certified training instructors, schools and equipment are available. Kite safaris or a trip to Vella island are also not to be missed.
