Evergreen Tortuguero
The Evergreen Lodge is idyllically situated just a 5-minute boat journey from one of the entrances to Tortuguero National Park, over 19,000 hectares of unique nature reserve which is home to an immensely diverse ecosystem. The Lodge is nestled in a 2 hectacre stretch of lush, verdant rain forest. The town of Tortuguero, sometimes called the turtle capital of Costa Rica, is on the countries Caribbean coast, and its beach is the nesting place of several types of turtle and is one of the most important nesting sites of the endangered green turtle in the Western Hemisphere.
The Rio Penitencia flows directly in front of the Evergreen Lodge, which gives guests glimpses of passing boats and the variety of birds who call the river home. The Evergreen Lodge is only accessible by boat or by air, guests flying into San Jose International Airport will need to take a road transfer to either Moine or La Pavona, where Colectivo boats make the journey several times a day. Alternatively, domestic airlines offer short flights from San Jose to Tortuguero.

The 66 rooms at the Evergreen Lodge are situated in individual private, cabins on stilts which provide stunning panoramic views of the surrounding tropical rain forest and the resident wildlife: colourful, jewel-like birds in the canopy, howler monkeys and the caimans that roam the waterways. The rooms are screened, so the experience is truly akin to sleeping in the jungle, just with added creature comforts and mosquito nets to keep the rooms clear of bugs.
The red almond wood and gypsum stilt cabins are connected to communal areas by a raised wooden walkway that cuts over the rain forest floor and waterways below allowing visitors a truly unique experience of indigenous flora and fauna. Each one is individually appointed, but the décor is in keeping with the rustic organic feel that extends through the whole lodge. Each cabin is complete with a private ensuite with a WC, sink vanity unit and shower.
Meals at the Evergreen Lodge are served buffet-style, and the two on-site restaurants offer a variety of traditional Caribbean fare. The fantastically stocked bar, situated by the Lodge’s turtle-shaped pool, offers guests a space to relax after a day of exploring the spectacular national park, beaches or water tours. Lunches are also provided on tour days.
The Evergreen Lodge offers a variety of packages which range from 2 to 5 days in length. Each package offers guests the opportunity to experience and witness the local culture and wildlife with a mixture of natural and cultural activities including all meals and accommodation. Also included in the packages are guided boat tours of the beautiful Tortuguero Canals, transport and tours to the picturesque town of Tortuguero and a guided tour of the property’s many hiking trails with a knowledgeable expert guide.
Tortuguero National Park protects over 19,000 hectares and includes a vast diversity of natural habitats: beach, estuary, marine, freshwater riverine and tropical lowland rain forest. The National Park is home to an extensive network of freshwater creeks and lagoons which are the natural habitat of seven species of river turtles, Spectacled Caimans, Southern River Otters, several types of crustaceans and over fifty species of freshwater fish.
Evergreen Lodge is committed to environmentally friendly and sustainable development; where possible, all building materials for the Lodge were locally and sustainably sourced. The Lodge hires locally and is committed to supporting the local community. The Evergreen Lodge is striving to achieve sustainability certifications by implementing energy and water conservation and offering training courses for both employees and the local community on the importance of sustainability within the tourism industry. On their own website, they state that the “overall goal is to use and treat the resources appropriately, as well as helping the environment and the local community.” The Evergreen Lodge is Rainforest Alliance certified.
