In rural parts of east Africa, herders are faced with challenges in protecting their livestock from lions and other predators. Livestock are very valuable in the lives of these herders and communities, so naturally protecting them is a top priority. However, as a consequence of the perceived threats from wildlife, herders will retaliate and kill animals to lessen the threat to their livelihoods, or simply out of revenge.
Similarly, farmers can have their crops damaged by elephants and crops are essential to the feeding of these communities, so their losses can have dire, even fatal, consequences. Chem Chem is therefore working to supply local farmers and herders with bomas that protect livestock from predators and prevent elephant raids on crops. They are also working to monitor lion movements and ensure elephants stay within the bounds of the reserve, and thus to prevent clashes between local communities and wildlife.
Poaching is a menace that not only devastates wildlife but also threatens the long-term sustainability of the communities in the whole region. The Tarangire-Manyara Ecosystem has become a haven for elephants and is somewhere they can remain safe from the dangers of poaching. Chem Chem’s anti-poaching initiative prioritises the immediate need to protect animals targeted by poaching, which requires training, manpower and equipment. Together with government agencies, they conduct joint projects and intelligence-led operations to ensure wildlife like elephants are protected against ivory poaching and other items traded on the black market, as well as bushmeat poaching.
Forest Chem Chem is surrounded by a wondrous ecosystem, home to all manner of animal and plant life. Chem Chem recognises that to best protect and preserve this natural, it first needs to be understood. A research project has been put in place so they can get a fuller picture of what’s happening on the ground, what needs to be done to preserve the environment and wildlife, and how best to accomplish this. The first step they took was to collar one lion to track its movements and show that the Tarangire-Manyara Corridor is working. Their rangers are also continuously collecting data on the movements of other animals to determine patterns and identify any areas for concern.
Work with communities is key to conservation in the wider Tarangire Ecosystem. The surrounding areas are home to villages that have amazing rich cultures but little access to many resources. To help bring balance in these areas, Chem Chem is currently committed to supporting some of the schools in the local villages, with aims to expand their support to all schools in the area. English courses are provided for young people and women to further broaden the scope of their educations. It’s Chem Chem’s hope to give as many people as they can equal chances to expand their knowledge and skillset to give them as many opportunities as possible.
Forest Chem Chem is a great choice for large families and welcomes children of all ages
