Specialists in Ecotourism and Adventure Travel

Hacienda El Porvenir is one of four lodges run by Tierra del Volcan, an inbound tour operator that specialises in ecotourism and adventure travel in the Cotopaxi Area on the Central Andes of Ecuador since 1999. Their mission is “to share and preserve one of the most beautiful places on our planet with a long term vision”.

Environmental Conservation Practice

Creation of Privately Owned Conservation Areas

Two of Tierra del Volcán’s lodges, Hacienda El Tambo and Hacienda Santa Rita have been declared protected areas, helping to reduce hunting practices within the area and protect the local wildlife and Native woods.

Condor Bio-reserve

A project that seeks to help the efforts of people working in areas of high biodiversity in Ecuador by creating conservation corridors.

Sustainable Agricultural Practices

Hacienda El Porvenir has 1000 hectares, 20% of this land is for farming crops, 20% is dedicated to the reforestation of native species to restore their natural habitat and 60% is used for extensive grazing with low environmental impact.

Habitat Restoration: Reforestation

Tierra del Volcán, have managed to plant over 600,000 native trees on the northern slopes of Rumiñahui Volcano of Hacienda El Porvenir’s land. This project, aims to recover the high Andean habitat, protect water sources, contribute to carbon uptake, and educate both visitors and those visited, on the importance of native woods.

Community Support

Education

Tierra del Volcán has programs with local schools located in the central area of the National Park of Cotopaxi. The goal is to support local schools by improving facilities and access to technology along with the training needed for their proper use. They also work to educate the local communities on waste management, conservation, and the dangers of living near an active volcano.

Local Sourcing

Tierra del Volcán is in partnership with many local businesses including transportation, tour guides, artisans, and tourism businesses, helping to support economically the local communities.  In addition to this, necessary products and food are bought at the local Machachi market. All the food guests enjoy at any of the four lodges helps to contribute to reducing waste, carbon footprint and benefiting local businesses.

Cultural Heritage

Tierra del Volcán is committed to supporting and maintaining local, traditional and cultural ways. The area in which the four lodges are located are home to the people known as “Chagra”. These people are linked to a distinctive way of life connected to the countryside, to the management of livestock and the breeding and use of horses. Tierra del Volcán sees the Chagra as a fundamental part of the region and helps to promote the diverse cultural and traditional ways of these people.

Awards and Certifications

TourCert

“The TourCert label describes the contribution of a company to sustainable development by assuming social and environmental responsibility beyond legal requirements. Tierra del Volcán was certified for the first time by TourCert in 2016.”

Lata Achievement Awards

“In its 9th edition, the LATA Achievement Awards recognised Tierra del Volcán as the runner up for the Sustainability Tourism award.”

Heating

With regards to heating Tierra del Volcán’s lodges only use eucalyptus wood, which is a non-native, fast-growing species. In certain areas efficient stoves have been installed to improve performance and reduce consumption. In the traditional rooms of the Hacienda, the most efficient electric heaters in the market are being used. Conscious energy use is being promoted throughout the properties with our travellers by encouraging them to wear more layers instead of using a large amount of energy to heat a space.

Energy

A low – consumption lighting system is in place in the great majority of the areas and rooms of the Hacienda, as well as movement sensors that optimise the use of electric power within the premises.

Waste Management

The lodges have a strict policy in place for reducing the impact of solid waste, by evaluating the impact and offsetting it. There are purchase and supply policies that help reduce waste at the source and encourage the sorting of waste into biodegradable, recyclable, and non-recyclable items. The organic waste is used as compost, and the inorganic waste is collected by the Municipality of Machachi.

The reduction of plastic is being promoted by offering drinks in returnable glass containers, buying products in large, reusable containers, and by being creative in looking for new ways to supply various necessities while being environmentally friendly. One example of this is the aluminium glasses that are used for tea while horseback riding.

Green Construction

The design and the materials of the two lodges Hacienda El Porvenir and Hacienda El Tambo follow traditional and ecological building systems; the walls are made of “tapial” (compacted earth) at Hacienda El Porvenir and basaltic stone from Cotopaxi’s past eruptions. The roofs are built with straw and eucalyptus wood.

Water Consumption

Tierra del Volcán’s policy to sustainably manage water resources means that the lodges are protected from and refrain from contaminating water sources, and make sure that the withdrawal rate does not exceed the natural replenishment rate. This helps avoid contamination of water sources. Through signs and information packets in the rooms the responsible and appropriate use of water is promoted. Biodegradable products are used in all on-site cleaning products.
