House of Waine is a boutique hotel in the suburbs of Nairobi that blends the elegance of modernity with a serene and peaceful setting. House of Waine is in a residential suburb of Nairobi, capital of Kenya. It’s believed that the suburb was named for Karen Blixen, the Danish author of ‘Out of Africa’, and her farm was located very closely where the hotel now stands. Being near the equator Nairobi and its surroundings enjoy a mild climate for most of the year and with its higher altitude humidity is very low and nights are cool. The hotel is only a short distance from Nairobi National Park, the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, and the Giraffe Sanctuary.

Standard Suites

House of Waine’s10 Standard Suites each have their own unique style and themes – from Victorian to coastal to Sahara – so no 2 are alike, with names to match! 4 of the suites can be flexibly arranged as single, twin or double rooms and the other 6 can be arranged as triple rooms as well. Every Standard Suite comes with a marble en suite bathroom fitted with a bath and shower, complimentary eco-friendly toiletries and a hairdryer. Other amenities of the rooms include:

Malaika Suite

The grand dame of the House, the Malaika or ‘angel’ Suite was designed by the owner’s very own mother in her signature style of grace and elegance. This room is spacious, light and airy with two lounge areas, a separate dining room and a beautiful balcony overlooking the pool and gardens. The en suite is correspondingly large and lavish, with a distinctive circular bathtub, complimentary eco-friendly toiletries and hairdryer. Other amenities included in the Malaika Suite are:

Poolside Cottage

House of Waine is pleased to introduce their newly redesigned Poolside Cottage, cosy, private and perfect for longer stays or those travelling as groups. The Cottage has 2 en suite bedrooms, one double and one single, an open lounge complete with a fireplace, a dining room, private kitchen and garden. Both bathrooms have their own bath and shower, and come with complimentary eco-friendly toiletries and a hairdryer. Other amenities in the Cottage include:

Dining

House of Waine offers breakfast, lunch and dinner for its guests from menus with lots of variety so there’s something for every taste. There are a range of dining options to choose from, such as breakfasts on the terrace, lunch by the pool or in the gardens. All dishes are prepared with the freshest of ingredients and the staff are well-known for their superb service.

Giraffe Centre

Created by the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife, the Giraffe Centre was established to protect the endangered Rothschild Giraffe, which are only found indigenously in East Africa. If you visit you’ll get the chance to feed the giraffes yourselves and learn all about the sanctuary’s important work.

David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust

The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is the most successful rescue and rehabilitation program for orphaned elephants in the world and a wonderful place to spend a few hours. Get to know the young elephants and their keepers, and learn about the Trust’s incredible efforts to ensure the safety and wellbeing of these beautiful animals.

Karen Blixen Museum

The Karen Blixen Museum is a national museum in Kenya, formerly the home of the Danish author of ‘Out of Africa’, Karen Blixen. The book was based on her time spent in Kenya and the farm she built at the base of the Ngong Hills. Enjoy guided tours through the house and grounds, which are still home to the original decor and equipment from the coffee farm. If you’re a fan of either the book or film then this will be a great stop to make while staying at Hemingway and step back into history under her very own roof!

The museum is open everyday from 9:30am to 6pm, including on weekends and public holidays.

Kazuri Bead Factory

The Kazuri Bead Factory was founded in 1975 by Lady Susan Wood in the Karen suburb. It created much needed jobs for single mothers in the community and has employed over 300 local women so far. Specialties of Kazuri Beads include handmade ceramic beads, pottery and handcrafted leather bags. They are open from 8:30am to 6:00pm every day except Sunday, when they open at 9:00am and close at 4:00pm.

House Of Waine of Treasures

Just a 10 minute drive away is House of Waine Treasures, a collection of exotic and unusual artefacts from around the world assembled to delight designers and travellers alike. Run by mother and daughter Janet Hurt and Sasha Horner, the collection is lovingly cared for and continues to be supplemented by their travels. There’s all sorts to find here – antique furniture, jewellery, architectural pieces, African artefacts and much more!

MATBRONZE

MATBRONZE was founded in 1987 by Denis Matthews as a fine art workshop to create beautiful bronze artwork. Using a precise mixture of blended bronze, artwork can be created with amazing precision and with complete freedom of creativity. The workshop and galley are just 15 minutes away and open 7 days a week.

Utamaduni Crafts Centre

Utamaduni Craft Centre offers a wonderful selection of items that make for the best souvenirs in Nairobi including wood & bronze carvings, antique African jewellery, glassware, Kenyan baskets, Maasai-themed artefacts and books.

Children

Children are welcome to stay at House of Waine, however there are no child-specific activities at the hotel and the local attractions are better suited to older children
