Koro River Camp

There are 6 Master Bedroom Tented Suites available, as well as an additional Family Suite. All suites are constructed upon wooden decks and hold a tented bedroom suite as well as a separate bathroom suite with shower and bath. An outside shower is also available, and each suite has a private plunge pool. The Family Suite (number 7) can accommodate up to 6 people, and consists of a master bedroom suite as well as two separate bedrooms. This suite also has a separate open air loo and shower.

All units are located on the river, offering stunning views landscape and the incredible wildlife that lives within it.

The perfect place to pick up a delicious meal, whether it is for brunch, high tea or a 3-course dinner. Meals can also be prepared in the open air boma and campfire, and enjoyed on a shady dining deck.

There is a Tented Bar and Indoor Lounge, where guests can socialise and swap exciting stories about their day over a glass of wine.

Guests are invited to participate in the research that takes place at the reserve, which is headed by Sander Vissia, who is completing a PhD at Wageningen University in Holland. A PhD level field study, focussing on the ecology of leopards and hyenas of the Tuli is underway. This includes the highly endangered Kalahari icon, the brown hyena. ‘Learn about hyena and leopard movement and interaction at Koro. Learn how bees protect vegetable farmland against elephants. Spend time in the bush with our researchers, download information from our cameras traps and get the ultimate wilderness experience.’

Take some time away from everything else at the secluded hides, which overlook natural springs and waterholes. Settle down with a beverage and a pair of binoculars to watch the game drink.

This excursion will allow you to visit a newly discovered Bushman settlement with paintings and scared sights from over 500 years ago. An extended game drive through the Tuli takes guests to the small village of Mothlhabaneng, and a stunning sandstone amphitheatre on the Moutlotse River with numerous beautiful galleries of elephant, giraffe, sable, wild dog and aardvark paintings.

‘The quality of these paintings rivals any area in Africa. The Africa Experience supports the local community in developing the site as a heritage and tourism place of interest.’

Spend a night out on a Starbed, an elevated game-viewing platform that overlooks a waterhole and the stunning Tuli horizon. Watch the nocturnal habits of the various creatures such as elephants, hyenas, leopards and antelopes as they visit the waterhole and quench their thirst under the beautiful night sky. Accommodating 4 people, the StarBeds experience consists of an open air (or covered) sleeping platform, safari bedding, a drinks station and a flush loo.

Study cooking, photography and art masterclasses with experts. Learn about the history and culture of the area, and participate in meditation and reflection workshops.

Embark on a bush walk with experienced guides and trackers to explore the beautiful flora and fauna up close. You can even tailor the experience to suit desires to track one animal in particular. Game walks in search of antelope, zebra, giraffe and of course elephants are part of the fare. Tracking big game on foot is truly an exciting and inspiring experience that can teach visitors a lot about Botswana’s wildlife.

Learn about the daily routine of safari creatures by watching them first-hand. Experience the rise of game early in the morning, or watch predators rest late into the afternoon against the backdrop of the African sunset. Explore the untouched wilderness of Tuli with your local guide and search for wondrous creatures of all sizes, such as giant elephants or resting lions. Or go on a Night-time Game Drive and witness hyenas hunting, or see nocturnal creatures travelling beneath the stars.

Book an excursion and game drive further afield in the Tuli or beyond, with sumptuous packed picnics or brunches that can be arranged on request. Find a shady spot to dine beside the Limpopo or among the remote springs dotted between historical sites.

Koro River Camp is owned by the Africa Experience, who put all of their profits back into the Timbo Afrika Foundation which operates projects related to nature preservation and wildlife conservation throughout Africa.

‘The long-term vision and dream is to create a large game corridor, and the first one will be ‘the Central Tuli Game Reserve’, a reserve over 70,000 hectares. In this way, wildlife can migrate freely and most importantly safely. Also, critically endangered species- such as black rhino and sable antelope- can be re-introduced to the area and start breeding. We have set up an anti-poaching system together with Smart Parks.’

The Timbo Afrika Foundation also aims to work with local communities so that youth and the next generations will be trained as wardens for nature reserves.

The Koro River Camp work with their local community in a number of ways.

‘We pride ourselves on our creation of proper staff accommodation, training all our staff in-house to a professional level in all required areas, and in training local management. We have established close working relationships with local communities that bolster our cultural knowledge, while we help them with care, training and protection against our wildlife to drive peaceful co-existence. This has resulted in an equal relationship.’

Koro River Camp believe in an eco-friendly approach to tourism. ‘We look after the environment too; growing our own vegetables, having implemented an advanced water recycling system, using bio-degradable detergents and having used sustainable building materials – we keep our footprint to a minimum. We have rehabilitated large, formerly degraded agricultural areas and are actively working to restore further areas to their original situation.’
