Reintroduction of Endangered Species

Majete Wildlife Reserve is southern Malawi is a renowned success story in African wildlife conservation. Whilst the victim of high levels of poaching, under control of the African Parks Network and Malawi government, it has been the sight of successful species reintroduction. This has made it Malawi’s only ‘Big 5’ park, but more importantly, provided a precedent for ecological sustainability and biodiversity. Robin Pope Safaris supports the work of the African Parks Network through sponsorship of the costs of restocking the reserve. Robin Pope Safaris funded the reintroduction of four lions from South Africa to Majete.

Conservation Education

Educating local communities about the vital need to protect wildlife species is a sure-fire step to helping conserve them. Out of high season, the Kuthengo Camp team escort local school children, school staff and their families around the park in game drive vehicles to education them about conversation and hopefully build their passion for wildlife. Often times, it is the locals’ first time within the park, seeing the majestic animals.

Local Produce

All Robin Pope Safaris purchase as much as possible from their local communities. In Malawi specifically, the vast majority of all rice and fish used is bought from surrounding producers. Not only does this ensure fresh, delicious food, but it means the safaris are supporting the economic stability of surrounding communities.

Caring for Staff

All Robin Pope Safaris, including Kuthengo Camp provide a healthy, supportive work environment for all staff, most of whom are hired from the local community. All staff are given a fair, competitive wage and the company assists staff in opening a current and savings account. All staff are also provided with a housing allowance or staff housing, receive free meals, and a funeral allowance when there is a death in the family. Staff are also educated about healthcare and sexual health, as HIV/AIDS remains a big issue in Zambia and Malawi. Robin Pope Safaris promote testing, counselling and assist in assessing anti-retroviral drugs. Staff and communities are never discriminated against for any diagnosis.

Across all Robin Pope properties there are training structures and opportunities for promotion and in-house education. Select staff are supported through further education to excel their careers even further.

Waste Water Treatment

All waste waster from the Kuthengo Camp kitchen, safari tents and staff houses is run through a sewage system that biologically treats it, and filters it though natural sand filters. Additionally, all outlets are tested on a regular basis so that the team can be sure not to be introducing harmful chemicals into protected environments.

Waste Management

Kuthengo Camp and all Robin Pope Safaris take care to reuse or recycle all waste. They do not provide plastic water bottles to guests, instead giving steel, reusable bottles. In their offices they use recycled paper, and recycle all paper and cardboard to local paper-making plants.
