Kwando Nxai Pan Camp

Nxai Pan is the only permanent camp situated within the Nxai Pan National Park and is located on the western edge of the fossil pan from which it takes name, facing open grasslands. The primary attraction to Nxai Pan National Park are the zebras that migrate by the thousands to the area to drop their young – the second largest land animal migration in Southern Africa, during the summer after the rains have fallen. It’s for these reasons and more that Kwando Nxai Pan Camp offers an appropriately situated, well round safari experience that benefits from relative seclusion and an abundance of undisturbed, thriving natural game populations that make for ideal viewing activities and excursions.

Kwando Nxai Pan Camp

Nxai Pan Airstrip is approximately 1 hour’s flight on light-aircraft from Kasane, and approximately 40 minute’s flight from Maun. Nxai Pan Camp is approximately 15 minutes’ drive from Nxai Pan Airstrip, provided there are no other stops along the way. Nxai Pan was originally state-owned land until an area of 1676 sq. km was declared a game reserve in 1970. Twenty-two years later in 1992 the boundaries were extended to include Baines’ Baobabs, and National Park status was granted.

Conducted close to the camp area, the walk is lead at a slow and leisurely pace, designed to allow engagement and the answering of questions so that guests may better understand the nature of the bushman and the environment they inhabit. Game Drives

Set forth for the open bush in custom designed Toyota game viewing vehicles that seat a maximum of six guests at a time – in two rows of three seats. Guests are guided by a two-person team consisting of an experienced guide and tracker. At Tau Pan, your tracker comes from the San Bushman tribe, an indigenous people that have resided within the Kalahari for generations and are thoroughly acquainted with the surrounding land and wildlife.

The drives provide guests and tourists alike, the opportunity to witness first-hand the scores of exotic and indigenous creatures that roam throughout the Kalahari. Be sure to bring a camera, as meandering elephant herds, prowling lion prides and frolicking zebra (among many other animals) make for magnificent photographic potential.

Lady Khama Charitable Trust

Kwando Safaris supports the Lady Khama Charitable Trust (LKCT), an initiative that serves to support several charitable causes throughout the country. Named after Lady Ruth Khama, the wife of the first President Sir Seretse Khama and mother of present President Lt. General Seretse Khama Ian Khama, she was considered by many as the mother of the nation and was well-known for her support of many charitable causes.

Kwando Safaris operates a ‘matching’ scheme for the benefit of the Trust and its associated charitable beneficiaries, promising to match the donation of any guest who wishes to financially contribute to this benevolent cause that serves to improve the lives of countless people facing unfortunate circumstances throughout Botswana.

Mummy's Angels Project

The ’Mummy’s Angels’ project began operation in 2018 at the behest of three local women from Maun. Having witnessed the plight of mothers with new-born children lacking in financial and family support, they decided to offer assistance in the form of providing donated clothes and garments for young children. The Mummy’s Angels programme has since supplied vast quantities of clothes for mothers in need to provide for their children, with Kwando Safaris promising to match every article of clothing donated with a similar donation. Kwando Safaris invites guests to bring some of the requested items along with them as they come on safari, incentivising brighter prospects for all mothers of new-born children and providing support for women who need it most.

Kwando's Bucket Project

Kwando Safaris aims to contribute its resources in the most efficient means possible when giving back to the community and the various projects that ensue. Botswana’s 50th Anniversary of Independence in 2016 was a great cause for celebration throughout the country and served as an appropriate means to contribute to many local communities within the reach of Kwando Safaris.

This was achieved by donating a variety of essential, highly sought-after household supplies that many rural communities often struggle to attain. Kwando Safari staff came together for a weekend, pooling many hours and resources in order to distribute buckets (a more useful household item than a basket for example) to the more rural outskirts of Maun. Such initiatives serve to provide rural communities with some of the essential necessities to facilitate the needs of everyday life, such as having an appropriate means to collect water from village wells. Kwando Safaris intends to continue this practice and will do it once at the beginning of the year and again around the anniversary period.

Empowering Local People

Kwando Safaris is an entirely citizen owned company, stressing the importance of local employment and empowerment. The overwhelming majority of staff are Botswanan nationals, ensuing an air of authenticity and legitimacy to the underlying safari experience. Seeking to offer long term careers as opposed to jobs, for every member of staff. The opportunities afforded to ambitious and talented citizens are widely sought after throughout the nation. Kwando supports 3 primary initiatives and local projects – Lady Khama Charitable Trust, Kwando’s Bucket Project and Mummy’s Angel Project, showcasing a commitment to contribution.

Water Treatment

Through using above ground, state-of-the-art sewage treatment plants, Splash avoids cross contamination of the soils or ground water through discharge of grey or black water. The fully treated product is eventually returned to the ground.

Solar Power and Water Heating

The excess of Sun and solar rays is undoubtedly one of the greatest natural resource available for utilisation through eco-friendly means, providing natural options for generating power and heating water by means of solar technology.

Kwando Safaris camps are situated in environmentally sensitive areas. To ensure that the camps cause minimal impact on their surroundings, the company has invested in highly efficient solar harnessing equipment to operate the entirety of the camp and inherent facilities. All electrical appliances used in the camps are energy saving products – ensuring the lightest possible carbon footprint. Such installations are implemented in a subtle manner and serve a crucial role in maintaining sustainability and ecological harmony, all without compromising the quintessential safari experience.

Children Welcome

Kwando Nxai Pan Camp welcomes all families with children age 6 and over. However, due to the potentially dangerous environments and wildlife, children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
