Local communities are impacted and supported through employment and other income-generating activities that take place at Little Kulala.
The property encourages local and farm-to-table products as well as efficient packaging in their kitchens, supporting both the community and reducing the use of fossil fuels and transportation miles as the camp is extremely remote. The food experiences at Little Kulala reflect Namibia’s sustainability as does the use of its indigenous ingredients.
The camp ensures that it does not overpopulate the area due to tourism and with only eleven suites in total at the property, the area and its resources are never overwhelmed due to visitors at the camp. The camp also encourages guests to learn about the conservation at the camp, taking part in conversations with the experienced local guides.
Little Kulala has gone through an extensive rebuild to further commit to the restoration of the Kulala Wilderness Reserve and to aid the biodiversity conservation within the area. The construction of the suites has used brick and glass as well as thatch, improving the airflow of the property as well as blending seamlessly into the desert environment.
The renewed camp has significantly reduced its carbon footprint, most notably by installing an all-new 100% solar energy system. This solar-powered system consists of the latest L-ion battery technology and a 600-panel solar array. The solar energy produced is able to heat the water, power energy-efficient lights and appliances as well as power the air-conditioning units. The waterholes on the reserve are also pumped using solar energy, providing water to the wildlife and eliminating any disturbance.
A comprehensive and careful rehabilitation programme has taken place to restore the degraded land to its original habitat and fences have been removed to allow wildlife their natural movement. This also allows for any endemic flora and fauna to being thriving once again.
Being located in the desert, it is incredibly important that water does not go to waste. Efforts have been made to conserve water by installing water efficient devices in the camp for both the staff and the property’s guests. Water usage is also monitored daily. There is also a Natura three-stage advanced reverse osmosis filtration system in place at the property to provide guests with high-quality, chilled water. This in turn reduces the amount of bottled water being used at the property.
The property has a waste management system in place and is a part of the Wilderness Safaris’ waste management programme that aims to eliminate the use of plastic in its camps altogether.
Families are welcome at the property and there is a family suite available for those travelling with their children.
