Little Machaba

Located in the Khwai Concession, Little Machaba is a small and intimate safari camp that can accommodate a maximum of 8 guests, providing a private and exclusive safari experience. The camp is built on raised decking which offers guests sweeping views of the bush and floodplains. The pathways to the tents weave between the tall trees that parade along the river’s edge and offer the camp some shade. Little Machaba is built with a charming 1950s aesthetic, calling back to an era of exploration. The camp’s location alongside the Moremi Game Reserve guarantees that guests will be able to observe a wide range of game and predators, as well as the beautiful and varied landscape of the Okavango Delta.

Game Drives

Embark on an exciting game drive and see the Okavango Delta’s amazing wildlife up close. The camp’s experienced guides will teach you about the extraordinary creatures that live in the Khwai Concession, as well as impart local knowledge. See hyenas playing, hippos swimming and watch bold lions, famous for their attempts to take down giant elephants. Witness these incredible creatures in their natural habitat, without any walls, barriers or fences.

Additionally, your guide will be able to help you spot the many species of birdlife that have made the Khwai Concession their seasonal home. The 4×4 safari vehicles are perfectly designed for traversing the delta, and are open-sided to offer guests spectacular photographic opportunities. Night Drives are also available to give guests the chance to venture out into the starlight and see the Khwai Concession’s elusive nocturnal creatures such as cute bushbabies and fluffy civets.

Guided Walks

Walking safaris usually take place early in the morning as this is the best time to see the delta’s varied wildlife. Guided walks tend to be quite leisurely, focusing on the tracks and clues that wildlife leave in the bush in order to follow the breadcrumbs to an exciting game viewing opportunity. Professional armed guides will lead you to various species and teach you to recognise the different tracks left by Botswana’s rich wildlife.

Mokoro Safaris

Discover the tranquil waterways of the Okavango Delta in a dug-out canoe and watch hippos swimming and elephants drinking from the riverbanks from the heart of the Khwai River. Mokoro safaris take place in the morning, but longer day trips can be arranged with the camp. Learn insightful facts about the Khwai River and the wildlife around it as you drift peacefully along the water. This activity depends on the water level of the river, and for safety reasons, guests must be of 16 years or older to travel in a mokoro.

Local Community Visits

Machaba Safaris offer support to villagers living in the remote areas where they operate. Guests are given the exciting opportunity to visit some of Machaba’s social responsibility sites and learn about local culture and heritage. See amazing traditional tribal dance performances and learn about life in an African village from the people who know Botswana best.

Education and Empowerment

Machaba Safaris provide support for the Main Camp Primary School, located in a remote village that borders the Hwange National Park. Machaba helps by providing teacher’s wages, facilities, textbooks and providing the school with a new solar-powered computer lab. They also built the first Gonnye Sethlare Pre School in May 2019 which provides education for 36 children, and they plan to build more of these education centres in other locations that Machaba Safaris work in. Their youth development plan gives young men and women the chance to gain work experience, as well as the training needed for becoming lodge managers.

Protect and Conserve

Machaba Safaris work with local stakeholders and communities in order to safeguard the crucial ecosystems that exist in Botswana and Zimbabwe. They do this by providing educational programmes and holding talks that teach how humans and wildlife can coexist, as well as giving aid to anti-poaching patrols in Southern Africa.

Community and Infrastructure

Machaba Safaris work with local communities in order to identify infrastructure needs and find ways of meeting them. This includes providing water to vulnerable communities, establishing sustainable vegetable gardens, putting up animal-proof fencing, and building homes for impoverished families. This gives back to the areas in which Machaba Safaris operate.

Conserving Energy

To reduce their carbon footprint, Machaba Safari camps use energy-efficient fridges in their kitchens, which are switched off at night to conserve power. Little Machaba is also powered by solar energy, with a backup generator to reduce carbon emissions. All appliances and light bulbs used are low-energy consuming, and the camp sacrifices some conveniences such as hairdryers and air-con in order to keep energy consumption to a minimum.
