Nyagatare is one of two regions in Rwanda that has best preserved its pastoralist heritage, with many pastoralist homes still grinding their own wheat and sorghum. While touring the traditional huts, stop and sample the traditional banana beer, ‘Urwagwa’, which is made of roasted sorghum flour mixed with fermented banana juice. The traditional song and dance makes for unique storytelling; marvel at the magnificently choreographed ‘Intore’, a traditional Rwandan warrior dance, or witness a “graceful display of feminine strength” in the ‘Umushayayo’ dance of women.
Rwanda has one of the highest bird counts on the continent, so is full of rife opportunities for birdwatching. Epic Hotel & Suites by Mantis will provide a species list so you can take the challenge to tick off enchanting sightings as they happen, with majestic birds such as Shoebill Stork, Papyrus Gonolek, Bennett’s Woodpecker, Red-Faced Barbet, and the Miombo Wren-Warblers to be spotted. The endangered Golden monkey can also be seen here, alongside chimpanzees and black & white colobus monkeys. The scenic flora and fauna of Nyagatare is not to be missed.
Named after the river that flows along its eastern boundary, the Akagera National park was founded in 1934 and is the largest protected wetland in Africa. Guests can expect to see elephants, lions, buffalos, hyenas, zebras, leopards, monkeys, serval, cats, giraffe, and many different antelopes, as well as some of the over 520 birds which take residence in the park. The park has both day and night game drives and boat safaris all year round but game viewing is best during the dry season where animals congregate around the water.
Mantis is a conservation-focused hotel group with curated hotels, eco-lodges and waterways experiences all over the world that sustainable travellers have been enjoying since 2000. Founded by conservationist Adrian Gardiner, Mantis grew from his vision to rewild and restore degraded farmland which he developed into the first private game reserve in the Eastern Cape, beginning an eco-tourism boom in a province that previously had few opportunities outside of commercial farming. The Mantis model has since been grown worldwide while remaining rooted in conservation; whether it is sustainable food gardens, recycling, energy efficient power, greening the community or rewilding, Mantis properties and projects promote eco-tourism and sustainability.
Mantis prides itself on delivering luxury hospitality never at the expense of our planet. They adopt a community-based conservation model, guiding their projects by:
- Conservation – to preserve the natural environment and biodiversity for future generations, by focusing on the protection of endangered species, habitats and meaningful environmental awareness campaigns.
- Sustainability – initiatives are rolled out at each property such as Planet21, Accor’s sustainable development program, which is a guide of quantified goals for Mantis to achieve.
- Community development – includes engagement with local community leaders for their input and approval, empowering local communities in a way that maintains dignity and avoiding dependency, as well as responsible exit strategies from community projects and above all else maintaining respect for the historic heritage, authentic culture, traditions and distinctiveness of local communities.
A partnership between Mantis and Accor was formed in 2018 to address both social and environmental imbalances and find a way to work through the ongoing crisis regarding conservation. This has led to the creation of the Community Conservation Fund Africa; a project formed from a passion to protect the natural world. Adrian Gardiner is the CEO and Chairman of this fund and already a well-known conservationist and philanthropist.
The organisation is a non-profit organisation that focuses on both fundraising and grant giving, aiming to educate and empower local communities by implementing sustainable wildlife management systems. Mantis offers curated destinations inspired by such sustainable adventures, inviting guests to experience eco-tourism as well as luxury. The collaboration between CCFA, Accor and Mantis has seen R7.5 million invested into communities and conservation.
The fund has been able to bring together three internationally successful wildlife conservation organisations: Wilderness Foundation Africa, Africa Parks and Tusk Trust, collaborating on projects in South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda. The projects have been able to contribute towards the alleviation of poverty, assist with personal and social transformation, change and uplift communities and addressing ways of creating more sustainable lifestyles while also helping to offset carbon emissions.
All power at Mantis Epic Hotel & Suites is solar generated. Low-impact and sustainable materials have been used in construction. Mantis ensures that their properties use locally sourced food within their lodges and restaurants to reduce their carbon footprint, while also supporting local business. The hotel also uses recycling initiatives and contributes to local programmes to preserve and protect the environment. Mantis takes part in the Accor sustainable development program among others and encourages guests to make use of the foundation’s carbon reduction calculator when planning their travels.
