Mawamba Lodge

Tortuguero is a unique, remote and off the beaten track town on the North Caribbean Coast of the country. Its location may remind you of the Amazon, and its community is an example of how to live surrounded by water, nature and exuberant vegetation. To get here you can travel by road, boat or fly in with one of the two domestic airlines servicing Tortuguero daily. The distance between the Lodge and the village of Tortuguero itself is a 10-15 minutes walk and less than 5 minutes by boat.

The freshwater provides sustenance to a huge variety of plant life, which then sustains a huge ecosystem of herbivores and carnivores. Sea Turtles are a populous species in the beach areas, which is where Tortugeuro gets its name, ”city of turtles”. The best time to visit is between November-April, when the temperature is best, with a whopping total of 12 hours of sunshine each day. Down the waterways, over 30 different species of freshwater fish are known to be found, alongside bigger beasts such as crocodiles, and overhanging spider monkeys.

Limon is the seventh-largest city in Costa Rica. It is a beautiful tropical paradise, with white sandy beaches and decorated with forests of gentle swaying green palm trees and is a beautiful slice of heaven, with much to see and do in the surrounding local town. As is the nature of the culture of Costa Rica, there is often a carnival or some form of celebration to attend. Limon is a bustling port town, rich with culture to explore which compliments Mwamba Lodge perfectly. The lodge is located by the beach, on a strip of land that bridges between river water and the ocean. A stay at the lodge is a stay in the heartland of paradise.

Three pillars of Sustainability

Mawamba Lodge aims to create a design that does not require overuse of land in order not to invade or damage the primary forest ecosystems. Because their owners have always shown great respect and concern for the environment. The lodge sets out three main pillars to achieve sustainability. The first is the way natural resources are used. Sustainability is prioritised by the lodge, promoting its conservation and rational use; the way that most actions comply with applicable environmental legislation.

Economical activities will be viable in the long term and its benefits will be distributed to all involved in an equitable manner.

Social-Cultural authenticity activities, products and services produced by the lodge will be oriented to preserve the country’s cultural diversity.

Biodigester

Mawamba Lodge use the manual of good practices in their daily operations, part of which is done through bio-digester, which allows them to treat the black water of the Lodge and in return obtain methane gas to heat their kitchens. Today, approximately 30% of the gas they use comes from bio-digester.
