Tanzania has two wet seasons. The main rainy season lasts from March to May, when tropical showers often occur during the day. The rainfall is heaviest in April and transforms the landscape into a lush green oasis. The dry season (May to October) brings cooler temperatures and lures wildlife to waterholes and water sources where they can be spotted more easily before a second, shorter rainy season returns in November until mid-January.

The changing seasons also trigger an incredible natural event – the Great Migration. After giving birth to their calves from December to March, scores of wildebeest (approximately 2 million) make the difficult journey from Serengeti to Kenya’s Maasai Mara in order to chase their food supply before it dries up. The wildebeest must survive treacherous river crossings and harsh conditions, with around 250,000 perishing throughout the course of the journey. Many zebra, eland and gazelle accompany the wildebeest on their trek. The presence of such a high volume of prey, and especially their calves, lures large numbers of predators including big cats, crocodiles and wild dogs. Guests visiting Serengeti from April to June will be treated to the unforgettable experience of watching millions of animals as they move as one giant parade.

Exceptional game viewing in Central Serengeti is not just limited to the Great Migration. Serengeti National Park is home to an abundance of game year-round and is a prime location for spotting big cats such as lions, leopards and cheetahs. The diverse landscape of rocky outcrops, vast plains, swamps and rivers is a haven for a number of animals, including elephants, hippos, crocodiles, buffaloes, and jackals.
