Culture Conservation

The lodge is proud to be a part of initiatives that conserve the cultural heritage in the Eastern Caprivi region and strives to educate guests on the heritage and culture of the area when staying here.

Local Community

In 2014 Namushasha Lodge worked closely with the local community to help open the Namushasha Heritage Centre to celebrate the rich cultural diversity of the Mashi community members in Eastern Zambezi. Built in an eco-friendly manner, the centre aims to build respect for both the land as well as the local culture, teaching tourists how to act responsibly during their stay in the area. The centre also provides local communities with a stable income and empowers them to manage their resources whilst simultaneously encouraging them to conserve their culture.

Education

Guests are encouraged to get involved in activities that include traditional dancing and making arts and crafts. With culture being one of the main attractions within the area, the lodge hopes that the activities on offer increase respect for the local culture.

The Gondwana Care Trust

The Gondwana Care Trust is on a mission to donate food, clothing, bedding and educational resources to those in need as well as support environmental causes. The trust assists with building projects for local schools and welcomes students into their lodges free of charge.

Social Partner Projects

Gondwana’s curio shops and online store supports income-generating partner projects that aids artists, entrepreneurs, women associations and charities that create local products from recycled goods. This aids in their income as well as expands their market. Partner projects include ‘Desert Secrets’, an all-natural company for sale in the lodges, ‘Little Bugs’, an income-generating community project for woman that provides education to children, ‘The Iyaloo Sewing Project’, a supplier of many of the lodge’s interior design and ‘The Mammadu Trust’, a charity providing education and meals to disadvantaged children in Katutura.

Eco Design

The lodge has been built as to ensure it does not interfere with the natural environment. The chalets are designed to blend into their natural habitat and not be an obstruction to the land. The Namushasha Heritage Centre was also built in an incredibly eco-friendly manner. Grass and reeds have been used within the process.

Nature Conservation

The lodge is a part of the Gondwana Collection and this group know just how important it is to protect the natural land. A group of businessmen sharing a passion for conservation set out to purchase a piece of land that bordered the eastern section of the Fish River Canyon. Noticing that intensive farming practices were not sustainable, their goal became to restore the wildlife and vegetation whilst nurturing the land. Over the years this vision has matured and more land has been acquired with goals to preserve it. Naturally occurring animals of the area have gradually been reintroduced and the land is monitored by qualified rangers and gamekeepers to ensure their safety.

Removing of Fencing

All of the fences inside Gondwana National Park have been removed to allow for the animals to naturally migrate. As migration is a natural and vital survival mechanism if game animals, the national park was also expanded to allow for this to take place.

Children are welcome at the lodge and children up to five years old stay free of charge. Those between the ages of six and thirteen stay at fifty percent of the bed and breakfast rate.
