Ngorongoro Crater Visit and Migration Calving

Visit the Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest inactive, intact and unfilled volcanic crater which was formed when a volcano collapsed in on itself over 2 million years ago. The crater is 2,000 feet deep and it is estimated that the original volcano would have been between 15 thousand and 19 thousand feet high. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area which surrounds the caldera is home to an abundance of birdlife and wildlife, with a resident population of approximately 25,000 large mammals, including the Ngorongoro Lions who live within this natural enclosure. Guests visiting during January and February will also be able to witness the wildebeest calving season, where 8,000 new calves are introduced to the world each day.

Olduvai Gorge

Take an incredible day trip from the Ngorongoro Conservation area where you can explore the Cradle of Mankind, named by the palaeontologists and archaeologists who have studied the crater’s volcanic surface and found fossilized bipedal footprints that are over 3 million years old. The Laetoli footprints show the development of our early ancestors as they learned to walk on two feet. The day trip concludes with a stop at Olduvai Gorge where the first Proconsul skull was discovered – belonging to a direct ancestor of homo sapiens. Guests can also wander along the Shifting Sands, black volcanic ash dunes that span 9 metres in height and 100 meters in curve length.

Walking the Serengeti

Walk along an incredible foot trail with One Nature’s expert guides, and immerse yourself in the incredible Nyaruswiga landscape. Guests can experience amazing wildlife viewing up close and personal, without the disruptive noise of an engine. Follow clues in the bush to find nearby game and watch the animals as they live freely in their natural habitat.

Community

One Nature sources ingredients and organic produce from farmers and growers from the communities in which they operate in order to support the local economy and reduce the importation of ingredients. One Nature also works with local communities in order to aid people to create a sustainable income through self-sufficient means.

‘Initiating and maintaining a respectful and symbiotic relationship with the local communities are integral components in our CSR platforms in each of our ultra-luxury camps, lodges or hotels. By forming mutually beneficial partnerships with local communities, business owners, growers and workers, we find sustainable ways to boost the local economy and also preserve the communities’ cultural integrity.’

One Planet

One Nature takes part in a number of eco-friendly initiatives such as their community tree planting projects. By planting trees, One Nature is offsetting the carbon emissions generated by their hotels and lodges, as well as replenishing a natural resource in order to protect the environment and restore any damage done to the landscape so that One Nature does not leave a negative impact on the areas in which they operate.

Serengeti De-Snaring Programme

One Nature is collaborating with the Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS), and Serengeti National Parks (SENAPA) in their de-snaring programme which saves wildlife from illegal traps set by poachers. The de-snaring programme includes training rangers and vets to monitor the wildlife populations, remove traps and release any animals that are caught in them. The project has also provided vets with the necessary medicines needed to treat the wounded animals that have been caught in these wire snares.

Regenerative Resources

One Nature is working to reduce its carbon footprint by using clean and eco-friendly energy and water sources. An example of this is One Nature’s solar-powered borehole project which supplies fresh water from a safe nearby source rather than from distant springs that wildlife is also dependant on. Additionally, these springs required large water trucks for collecting the water which was damaging to the environment.

One Nature also provides communities with environmentally-friendly equipment such as solar panels and solar-powered cookers in schools. They also train members of the local community in eco-friendly practices such as beekeeping and farming silkworms.
