The Peech Hotel was one of the first hotels in Johannesburg to be awarded a certificate for Fair Trade in Tourism in 2010.
‘This certification acknowledges hospitality establishments that adhere to specific criteria including fair wages and working conditions, fair distribution of benefits, ethical business practices, and respect for human rights, culture and the environment.’
Little Eden is a charitable home, located 25 minutes from the hotel, that cares for children and young adults with severe learning disabilities. Many of the residents have been abandoned or their families were unable to cope with looking after them. The Peech Hotel has been supporting Little Eden with monetary donations, donating a fixed amount for each guest that stays with them.
They are also part of Pack For a Purpose, an initiative that encourages guests to travel light and utilise their spare suitcase space to bring donations such as educational toys for infants and young children, musical instruments, art supplies, linen, clothes, shoes and toiletries. Donations are transported directly from the hotel to Little Eden where they can go to make a real difference to the lives of those who need them. The Peech Hotel also donates items such as linen, crockery and furniture, and each month one staff member is awarded a stay at the hotel as a reward for the vital work that they do.
The Peech Hotel uses a Bokashi wet waste facility to reduce the amount of waste they produce. The hotel also composts garden and food waste, and separate paper, glass, tin and plastic so that they can be recycled. Probiotic waste is processed and recycled into fertiliser, which is then used in the hotel’s gardens. The Peech Hotel is also working to reduce plastic waste by providing drinking water for the restaurant, bistro and rooms from their bottling facility, also reducing the emissions generated from importing bottled water.
Children of all ages are welcome at The Peech Hotel and children younger than 3 years can stay in a cot at no extra charge.
