It was created by the Purcell family, long time owners and operators of the Ski Portillo, famous in Chile for its excellent skiing, food and warm hospitality. Tierra Atacama architecture, interior design and gardens were designed by some of Chile’s leading creative talent. At Tierra Atacama, the hotel has created a serene space in the guest rooms. Touches of local culture are scattered throughout, from handwoven throws to cowhide rugs and llama figures carved from the volcanic rock of nearby Toconao. All rooms look out over the Andes mountain range and nearby volcanoes, with views of the desert from the moment you wake, to the moment you fall asleep.
There are three key categories of rooms. The Oriente Rooms feature nude and cocoa tones, large canopy beds, sliding glass doors, and beautiful views of the nearby volcano. Poniente Rooms also capture beautiful volcano views, as well as being more spacious and with a few more special touches. Lastly, there are also Family Rooms which can accommodate up to 6 people over 2 levels.
As well as honouring the heritage and landscape of the region, the rooms are full of luxurious amenities. You will find soft beds dressed in fine cotton, private terraces with sweeping views of Licancabur Volcano or the Cordillera de Sal, and al fresco bathrooms for showering under a night sky glowing with stars.
The hotel restaurant provides a welcoming atmosphere, with it being a luxurious and exquisite space to dine in. Also, the hotel has its own Bar making it great for an afternoon coffee or to enjoy handcrafted cocktails (i.e. Rica Rica Sour – signature cocktail) and wines on an evening, accompanied by handmade empanadas. The restaurant offers its guests authentic north – chilean cuisines prepared by experts chefs, which are all made from local produce – using seasonal ingredients.

Bike tour excursion towards the Quebrada del Diablo ‘Devil’s Canyon’, witness scenic sights across the Atacama as you go. Your trip will start from the local area, first you will ride along the banks of the San Pedro River, at 2,400m above sea level, then you will cross a river to get to the other side and will arrive at the Quebrada del Diablo, which offers a naturally formed bike trail for you to zip along. This path will lead you up higher and higher until you reach the end of the canyon, looking out over rugged, rocky earth juxtaposed with gorgeous views of the Catarpe plantations. After taking in this view, you will make your way back to the hotel, following the meandering waters of San Pedro River as your guide.
Immersive into this exploration of Machuca and the Río Grande. With a consistent altitude of around 4000m above sea level throughout the hike, you will follow a rough path which surrounds the Peñaliri riverbed, hardy plants and a high number of native animals and wildlife. Along your hike, you will pass the settlements of Peñaliri and Rio Grande Village. Discovering the traditional agricultural plantations of crops which are perfectly suited to an extreme, high-altitude environment. They consist of native potato species, corn and members of the onion family. This gives you an insight into the adaptability of both mankind and nature in such extreme conditions, it serves as an evocative highlight during your time spent in the Atacama Desert.
This is the perfect morning excursion, making the most of the temperature at this time of day. You will be departing the hotel and heading south by bike towards the edge of the Atacama Salt Flat. The terrain is mainly flat and a little uneven at times. On arrival at the Cejar lagoon, the view of the thick salt crust which has formed around the water hole is fascinating. The salt concentration is very high and one floats in the spectacularly clear waters. Following a swim and a rest, you will return to the hotel via a vehicle provided by the hotel. This excursion is a wonderful experience if you want to explore the outdoors and lagoons of the region.

100% of water at the hotel is extracted from their own well. The water is then treated by its own osmosis plant, which enables the Tierra to provides its own water to the hotels.
Tierra is part of the Likan Antai technical school, having taken on more than 50 pupils as apprentices in the fields of tourism, agriculture and electrical engineering.
Tierra Atacama is one of the first hotels in South – America to produce solar powered electricity with hybrid systems which meets the hotel’s daily energy demand.
