The Lencois is an exotic river region in the national park region Maranhao. It is a unique melting pot of different ecosystems and environments. There are a multitude of rising and dipping sand dunes, pockets of dense jungle forest, segregated by expansive river roads. 133 species of birds and 134 species of plants can be found in this dense biosphere. An infrequent rainfall marries the rough sand dunes with a multitude of interjoined lagoons. The area is occupied by native fishermen, who also raise cattle to help get by in the dry season, when the pockets of water dry up.
The park is located on the coast of the State of Maranhao, between Barreirinhas and Primera Cruz counties. Visitors can choose to travel by bus or car for a ten-hour trip, or a charter flight to the state’s capital city, Sao Luis.

Lencois offers many different types of tours around the area, from exploring the cave systems to the rivers or dune deserts. What is known as the Maranhenses national park provides dozens of spots to explore and seek out adventure.

Pousada Vila Serrano takes full consideration of its environment and aims to utilise materials that work in tandem with the green ecosystem surrounding the hotel and not to exploit it. Sustainable and ecological techniques are employed to preserve as many trees as possible, minimising the act of construction. Treated reforested eucalyptus wood is used in favour of local wood, and the bricks are compacted earth and minimal cement.
Lime and natural dyes are used to paint the walls, derived from the coloured natural stones, clay and annatto seeds allowing the walls to breathe. The water in the showers is heated by solar energy generated by panels on the rooftop, and organic waste is turned into fertiliser for the garden. Inorganic materials are sent for recycling.
