I’ve enjoyed the subject of history since I was in school. Choosing a modern history degree at university helped deepen my knowledge of the recent past and leave the traditional British-centric history behind, focusing more on international approaches. Through my degree I developed a keen interest in politics, finding that studying modern history and politics goes hand in hand. After finishing university, during the tumultuous year of 2020, I became more politically aware and active. My two biggest passions are helping to create a society where everyone is equal and accepted, and protecting the environment. Reading hard hitting articles which promote critical thinking in newspapers, on blogs and in magazines inspired me to start writing myself.
I really enjoy learning about cultures around the world and I aim to capture this passion in my writing, with pieces which revolve around the importance of understanding and celebrating cultures which are different to our own. A big inspiration of mine is Simon Reeve, and I have been inspired to follow a career further into journalism and documentary making, bringing light to subjects and people who normally do not get a voice.
I am always reading and trying to educate myself on important societal issues, and I aim to write in a way which is accessible and easy to understand, so readers can walk away enlightened yet not confused. In the future, I would like to spend some time exploring the world, having wanted to visit Vietnam for a long time and a more recent desire to visit Botswana, Peru and Costa Rica.
Visiting Machu Picchu in Peru has been on my list for a while. The mixture of visiting an ancient Incan citadel, the physical challenge of hiking to the top, and the surrounding panoramic views of the Andes all come together to make my ideal travel experience!
When I travel I find I take a lot of short videos. I feel this captures experiences better than a picture as you can hear the sounds as well as see the sights. With a video I’m not just capturing a moment, I’m capturing a memory.
