Anantara Bararuto Island Resort is deeply involved in the island community. Its work has successfully brought nine water wells to two villages across the island, and has supported the creation of an island health centre in 2020. Previously the closest health centre was 25km away, and the nearest hospital was four hours away by Dhow boat. Each June the Anantara Bararuto Island Resort team run a charity race to raise money in support of the health centre.
Most people around the island depend of fishing for both income and food. But as fish populations decrease each year, food insecurity has begun to rise on the island. That is why the resort has begun its vegetable garden. Not only do you get the freshest produce for each meal, but the locals have learnt how to care and grow and vegetable garden of their own. This is in the hope that they will not have to be so reliant on what is becoming an unreliable source of food.
Anantara Bazaruto Island Resort is a proud participant in the Pack for a Purpose program, aiming to help tourists make a lasting difference to the places they visit. In the aim of helping the younger generations on Bazaruto Island, the resort has created a training program that gets 18-24 year olds into the world of work. Providing meaningful work experience, the resort gives young people the chance to elevate their potential and go onto bright and brilliant careers. The resort currently employs ten trainees over a period of six months, across the resort’s departments.
