Sustainable Architecture

The Maldives is known for its naturally beautiful views and the resort makes sure that the architecture has been built with this in mind. The architect, Jean-Michel Gathy conceived the resort in synergy with its natural surroundings. The villas naturally blend into the island’s landscape and vegetation and are perfectly fit for the Maldives. It allows guests to submerge themselves in the island experience completely. Furnished with organic materials such as bamboo, rattan and coconut shells, even the villas are made to fit the design of the island.

Glass Bottles

Water is purified locally at the island through a unique system. It is then bottled into glass bottles for guests to enjoy. This eliminates air miles from importing bottles and eliminates the need for plastic bottles on the island that would ultimately endanger the delicate ecosystems.

Marine Education

An in-house marine biologist resides at the island and is available to teach guests about the valuable work that takes place at the Atoll. Guests can take dolphin cruises and learn about the delicate ecosystems and even witness it themselves on dives and snorkel expeditions, seeing the restoration of coral and how it protects so much of the marine life that lays beneath the surface.

Coral Protection

The Atoll is home to an array of rare marine life that thrive off of coral reefs that lay beneath the waters. These ecosystems are in need of constant protection and thanks to The Dive Centre there are two projects currently underway doing just that. A coral tree has been able to grow 37 fragments of coral and is being monitored, showing significantly positive results. Coral frames can also be found in the lagoon in many area and are being monitored to evaluate the effects of coral bleaching.

Seagrass Protection Area

Seagrass is an important part of the ecosystem in the Atoll and is shelter for thousands of marine animals. It provides food and protection and is able to hold sediment together, preventing coastal erosion. It plays a vital role in the fight against climate change and Cheval Blanc recognises this and is keen on ensuring its protection.

A protected area of seagrass is located between The Dive Centre and The White Bar and is constantly growing in size. Due to the success of this project the island has been able to open a new snorkelling trail to discover more of the marine life beneath the surface.

Solar Power

Free roof-space at the back-of-the-house-buildings at the resort are covered with solar panels, allowing Cheval Blanc to generate about 20% of its total power demand with it during the day. It is placed where it does not obstruct the natural views and is able to take advantage of the naturally hot location.
