By Land

‘For such a small island, you’ll be surprised to discover just how many different things you can get up to.’

Tracking and Tagging

Rise early with the rangers to tally tracks of the Hawksbill and Green Turtles egg-laying sea turtles on the beach or scout the forests for Magpie-robins and Paradise flycatchers to learn more about breeding and tagging projects for these critically endangered birds.

Explore

For a more relaxed experience in which to get to know the island and its inhabitants, a simple stroll or bicycle ride can reveal plenty: century-old tortoises, tours of the island’s poultry coops and animal pens, forest walks, the ecumenical chapel and much more.

Sports

If you’re feeling a bit sporty and up for a healthy competition against friends or loved ones, then there are other activities available such as tennis.

The Sea is Always Calling

Snorkelling and Kayaking

Explore Denis Islands surrounding lagoon to your heart’s content by snorkelling or kayaking with all the necessary equipment that we provide for you. Encounter the reefs in the lagoon teeming with tropical fish, turtles and other colourful forms of marine life.

Diving

Should you wish to venture further and enjoy more time – and greater depths – underwater, our PADI dive centre offers a range of different dive sites to choose from, as well as certification courses for beginners. There are 9 coral dive sites with a gradual drop off 5 – 35 metres into the ocean depths. A wide variety of species including turtles, sailfish, tuna, dolphins and rays may be observed on most of the reefs.

Fishing

True catch-and-release sport fishing can also be organised for you, with a boat charter to “The Drop-Off,” where ocean depths plunge to 2,000km at the edge of the Seychelles plateau. We also offer excellent opportunities for bottom-fishing grouper or Seychelles’ famous red snapper, and should your catch meet our conservation requirements, it may also be possible to turn your fish over to our chefs to prepare something special in the kitchen.

Nature’s Own Spa Sanctuary

Denis’ Natures Own Spa Sanctuary treatments use only local ingredients, and the spa offerings themselves are just as unique as Denis itself, with no actual spa on the island we bring the treatments to you at your cottage in the open air. Although, there are also options to book an outdoor treatment under the Casuarina trees, where you’ll find the only distractions to be the soothing sounds of nature and gentle lapping waves.

Reducing Carbon Footprint

Not only passionate about their conservation programmes, but Denis Islands overall administration places an emphasis on sustainability. The goal is to reduce wastage and to maximise what the island provides; this of course goes for the farm and kitchen but also the other practical applications too. Denis Island is home to a self-sustaining lumber mill and carpentry workshop, providing all of the wooden flooring for the hotel, as well as the majority of furniture pieces in the cottages, the lobby and restaurant. With their deep-rooted knowledge of the local eco-system they aim to use local materials and methods as import substitutes wherever possible, significantly reducing our carbon footprint.

The innovative use of always-available coconut palms for cattle feed, has also resulted in an increase of milk production for the entire island.

Renewable Energy

Denis Island aspires and thrives for self-sustainability, in 2018 and in collaboration with DHYBRID from Germany, Denis Private Island embarked on the first of a four-phase photovoltaic solar power system, in order to reduce the island’s dependency on fossil fuels, the installation of these photovoltaic panels initially reduced the islands diesel consumption by 100 litres per day.

“We’ve always known that in keeping with our mission for not just a sustainable hotel but a sustainable and self-dependent island, we would have to address the issue of power” Mr Mason (Denis Private Island owner).

Denis Island has quickly become a role model in sustainability, with the idea that other islands belong to the Seychelles will follow suit in their bid towards renewable energy. Having this system in place is allowing Denis Island to gradually and responsibly shift towards this new technology without disrupting their existing operations.

Conservation Projects

‘The Green Islands Foundation, an NGO with a decade-long track record of conservation success in Seychelles, has a permanent outpost on the island and oversees a variety of programmes.

The translocation of some of Seychelles’ rarest endemic birds has been one of Denis’ most important environmental achievements, paving the way for some of these species to improve their standings on the IUCN Globally Threatened Birds list. As a result, Denis is the only place in the world in which a morning’s walk can bring you across the Seychelles Fody, Magpie-robin, Paradise flycatcher and the Seychelles Warbler.

Hawksbill and green turtles laying their eggs on the protected shoreline of Denis are monitored and tagged, providing valuable information to assist in the protection of the species. Extensive research into the ecosystem of the island’s reef flats – essential nursery and feeding grounds for fish and green turtles – and the Seychelles government designating official protected status for the waters surrounding Denis, have been instrumental in preserving the island’s marine environment just the way nature intended.

The restoration of native forest habitats, rearing of giant land tortoises, and a fledgling seabird colony are just a few of the many other conservation projects currently ongoing on Denis.’

Families Welcomed

Families are welcomed at Denis Island, with the option for families to book a second room for a maximum of 3 children under the age of 18 years staying in their own room, receiving a 25% discount off the double contracted room rate.

The Island ensures it is extraordinarily safe, and an excellent family holiday destination, ideal for children
