Environmental Mission

Fairmont has been an environmental leader among Barbados hotels for over 25 years now. It was one of the first luxury hotel brands in the country to achieve its emission reduction targets, and they embrace the Planet 21 initiatives developed by owners Accor. They see it as a privilege to enhance customer experiences and promote a rich cultural bond with their communities by ensuring the long-term sustainability of the planet. From miniature rooftop bee hotels to inventive water-reduction methods, Fairmont is proud to be recognised as having one of the most detailed eco-friendly programs in the North American hotel industry.

Not alone in their mission, they work with their partners to innovate and develop new ways of reducing environmental footprints. By involving their partners in sustainability efforts, they raise the environmental standards throughout their supply chains, making this a collaborate effort. Fairmont and Accor Hotels in general will continue to lead the way in finding inclusive and sustainable hospitality solutions.

Planet 21

Fairmont is proud to support and participate in the groundbreaking Planet 21 scheme, Accor’s own environmental and social sustainability program. Planet 21 challenges everyone – guests, hotel colleagues, partners, and property developers – to take decisive actions to minimise the hotel’s impact on our planet. Initiatives addressing reforestation, water conservation, energy saving and food waste reduction are an integral part of Planet 21. The hotels pledge to continue promoting long-term sustainability and care in each of our communities.

Six Pillars

Caring for planet Earth isn’t something Fairmont takes lightly. It isn’t just a matter of turning lights off or planting an organic garden, although they are important. To achieve their goals, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts prioritises six key pillars to drive sustainability:

  • Guests
  • People
  • Partners
  • Communities
  • Buildings
  • Food

They recognise that environmentally friendly hospitality practices help protect the world’s most diverse and picturesque locations. Fairmont pledges to constantly seek better ways to minimise their impact on Mother Earth.

Caretakers of the Planet

Fairmont believes their role as caretakers for local ecosystems is vital. Guests and colleagues work and play in locations that need protecting for future generations. Ecosystems naturally require a delicate balance of conservation and public use. To protect and preserve these ecosystems, the hotels support three key initiatives:

  • Sustainable design and construction
  • Support for biodiversity
  • Integration of sustainable procurement in our purchasing process

These proactive steps are visible efforts to reduce their carbon footprint, consumption of energy, and production of waste.

Fairmont is proud to partner with like-minded organisations to find inclusive, sustainable hospitality solutions. The joint effort with Pollinator Partnership is one such example, and they’re committed to providing financial support, raising awareness and creating and maintaining apiaries and wild bee rooftop “hotels”.

One new initiative is a digital pilot at five of Fairmont hotels. Cameras and hive-tracking devices have both been installed and this state-of-the-art technology tracks the number of visiting bees and the distance they travel each day. Additionally, they collect data on the honey and analyse the flower, tree and plant nectars the bees prefer. This data is then compared to the classification of colour and grade of the honey according to the Pfund scale.

The Four Rs

Caring for the planet means being proactive stewards of the environment. Fairmont Hotels & Resorts recognises climate change as a global issue that everyone must work to address. In response, they have committed to four environmental priorities:

  • Reduce consumption of energy
  • Reduce water consumption
  • Reduce the amount of waste
  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions

Their colleagues embrace sustainable practices designed to reduce and lessen the impact of greenhouse gas emissions on both a local and global scale. Each hotel monitors, measures, and reports on their emissions. This is one reason why they embrace technology and actively seek to change harmful behaviours. These efforts are focused on diverting waste from landfills to recycling, and donating or selling used cooking oil and grease to be turned into biodiesel. Together, each action contributes to a healthier environment for future generations.
