Seychelles National Botanical Gardens

In Mont Fleuri on the edge of Victoria you will find the Seychelles National Botanical Gardens which has existed for more than a century and therefore is one of the oldest national monuments of the Seychelles. Explore the landscaped and beautifully maintained area that houses a large collection of old, exotic, and endemic plants, which are cultivated in the wonderfully designed tropical garden.

Besides the palm trees you will discover the botanical gardens, home to many spice plants and fruit trees, most of which can only be admired here. You can also see giant tortoises from Aldabra Atoll, some of which are more than 150 years old, as well as fruit bats that eat or sleep in the large trees. The latest attraction to the National Botanical Gardens is an orchid house, which houses a collection of colourful orchids, including native varieties.

Hiking Morne Blanc

Starting in the Morne Seychellois National Park, you will hike your way through mist forests to the top of Morne Blanc. Once there, you will be met with sweeping panoramas across Mahé’s western seaboard, also witnessing tropicbirds swirling above and below you. The initial part of the trail passes through an old tea plantation, but as the trail elevates the mist forest ecology becomes more evident, with lichens, mosses and ferns covering most surfaces. Jackfruit trees stand adjacent to the path upwards to the mountain, these large fruits can often be seen on the ground after having fallen.

Mountain forest areas such as these are common homes for many of Seychelles’ endemic birds, such as the Seychelles bulbul, the Seychelles swiftlet, and the Seychelles sunbird. Listen out to hear the surprisingly loud calls of the world’s smallest frog, which is endemic to Seychelles, though at 1 cm in length, finding one will prove much more difficult. Morne Blanc is an ascent in the heart of the forest, offering the most beautiful overlook on the west coast, one not to be missed.
