The Maldives is one of the world’s top destinations to scuba dive, with its clear waters and marine life. Komandoo has its own Prodivers Scuba Centre for those at any level, whether you are a seasoned pro or this is your first time. Featuring guided diving and snorkelling boat trips it also has its own diving operator to assist you on many of its PADI 5-Star programs.

Komandoo offers a host of water sports to partake in during your stay on the island. Snorkelling, windsurfing, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding are available for both rental and instruction. The ocean can be your adventure or your place of tranquillity depending on what you choose.

Komandoo Island Resort, surrounded by a beautiful lagoon, with an amazing house reef and long stretches of white, sandy beach, is located in the Lhaviyani Atoll. It is 500 meters long by 200 meters wide, about 25 acres. Part of the CCR group, Komandoo Resort adheres to the guidelines set out by the corporate sustainability report ensuring waste, water, energy management practices are in place as well as environment awareness assessments and also excellent support to the local community through employment. Komandoo has gained a Travelife Gold Certification and is proud to extend this status.

Local fruit and vegetables are sourced from suppliers on the island in an effort to reduce the need for packaging as well as support the local community. Fish is sourced locally and purchased directly from the fishermen themselves. Purchasing locally eliminates air miles at the resort as fish and fresh food can be sourced from the island or neighbouring islands.

As plastic is one of the biggest polluters of the ocean, Komandoo has a heavy focus on ensuring they are not a contributor to the damage it is doing. Their targets in plastic reduction have been met, reducing the purchase of plastic water bottles by 99%. They also used paper straws opposed to plastic straws and stopped buying plastic bin bags altogether. The kitchen is also fully equipped with sustainable alternatives. The utensils use ceramic, metal or wood instead of plastic and are renewable as well as reusable options.

This is an initiative formed by management at Komandoo to keep the environment clean and to educate locals on the importance of sustainability as well as practices for a healthier life. It plans to develop coral plantations, reef cleaning programs and awareness of common trees in need of preserving on the island. The resort also allows guests to learn about the natural beauty of the Maldives, exploring the reefs for themselves and even planting trees in an effort to take these environmental lessons home with them.

The biggest way that Komandoo helps the community is in employment at its resort. Employees each have the opportunity to work their way up the ladder at the resort, with senior management compromising of locals. This is just one aspect of community support as the resort also sources its food such as vegetables and fish from local gardeners and fishermen. Locals are also given the coconut leaves cuttings from the coconut trees to make traditional thatch roofing which is a commodity bought by other resorts. Maintaining this strong relationship with the community allows for the resort to thrive on the island it is built.

Komandoo Island Resort has managed to plant more than 2,000 trees on the island to remove CO2 from the atmosphere, a number they hope to build upon with a tree planting project in place involving guests themselves.

Water consumption is monitored at the resort in a variety of ways. Sensors are installed to reduce its use such as in mens urinals and the resort captures and uses rainwater whenever possible, using recycled water for irrigation purposes, using seawater whenever possible and meeting targets each year.

The resort is home to an array of wildlife and marine life that is in need of constant protection. The resort aids their protection in many ways. ProDivers, the dive centre, monitors the flora and fauna of the island and reefs, maintaining it and helping it grow. Fishing on the protected reef is against the law and enforced at the resort, allowing guests to snorkel to observe these rare creatures. The resort also prohibits guests from feeding the fish as it kills their natural hunting instincts and no animal is allowed to be kept in a cage on the island, even as a pet.
