Sun Resorts has always been actively involved in community matters, particularly in the villages and in places surrounding their properties. They raise environmental awareness among their associates, suppliers, guests, and communities and they work within the community by organising activities, volunteering and raising money for facilities.

In 2008 after one of the Sun Resorts’ employees’ children was diagnosed with cancer and passed away aged 5, the staff, moved by this terrible event, came together and raised Rs 8 million for the expansion and renovation of the Children’s Cancer Ward at Victoria Hospital. Sun Resorts believes that every child should have access to essential healthcare and now supports more than 100 children who require treatment.

Sun Resorts try to minimise pollution and reduce the waste that they produce. One way that they have done this is by partnering with the University of Mauritius to implement a food waste reduction programme. They also recycle brochures into bags, and recycle the hotel’s used oil.

Sun Resorts have reduced the amount of single use plastics that are used in the hotel, such as banning plastic straws and bottling their own water so it’s not in a plastic bottle. They are working on finding alternatives to plastics in their supply chains.

Sun Resorts supports two coral nurseries that are working on a preservation programme for coral. The Lagoon Nursery and the Open Sea Nursery are both working towards growing coral to increase diversity in the ecosystem. Sun Resorts also partake in beach cleanups, clearing 3km of beach of waste.
