Tread Lightly Initiatives

Tread Lightly by LUX* initiatives include renewable energy projects, water saving devices, Energy Management Systems, LED light retrofits, locally sourced Earth & Dance waters, in house bottling, towel and linen reuse program LUX* Laundry Asterix, paper reducing technology LUX* Valet, Scrucap wines, Mamma Aroma organic spa treatments, among others.

On the biodiversity front, we collaborate with the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation to protect endemic flora and fauna, LUX*South Ari Atoll is preserving its native whale sharks through in house scientific study. In Reunion Island, LUX* Saint Gilles and Hôtel Le Récif support the NGO ReefCheck to study and protect the fragile coral reef and further sensitise locals and tourists.

Supporting Local Communites

LUX* Resorts and Hotels provides funding for a range of social-development and educational initiatives undertaken by South Ari Atoll’s Dhigurah School and the Youth Foundation Movement of Dhigurah.

Food sustainability

The resort has its own herb and vegetable garden on site so that the guests are not only getting the freshest of ingredients but also reducing the consumption of air miles when providing for guests. In sourcing locally the resort can ensure that guests are being given the best quality whilst supporting the community. Fish is caught fresh on the day it is served, locally sourced by fishermen so that the resort knows where and how it is sourced.

Solar Operation, Eco Initiatives & Marine Conservation

LUX South Ari Atoll Resort and Villas engage in efforts to fight climate change such as planting corals with our very own marine biologist on hand to ensure the reefs are constantly attended to, banning single-use plastic and having our own water plant to save over 810,000 plastic water bottles. By growing a resort herb garden and vegetable patch the island resort has eliminated extra air miles and by launching the world’s largest floating solar platform at sea energy is being used harnessing natural elements. Providing guests with bicycles, island cruisers and solar-powered shuttles to get around once again reduces the resort’s climate impact and by doing good  they are encouraging guests to do the same with an ocean or island clean-up.

LUX* South Ari Atoll, Maldives Marine Biology Centre

One of the defining characteristics and biggest attractions of the Maldives is its extraordinary aquatic ecosystem. The waters around Dhidhoofinolhu, home to LUX* South Ari Atoll, teem with marine life. To understand and protect it, LUX* has created a dedicated on-site Marine Biology Centre, with a special focus on the conservation of the world’s biggest fish: the whale shark.

Beach Villas and Pavillions are set up for families and there is a range of activities for children to get involved with. A highlight for most is the booklet containing clues for a treasure hunt. The youngest guests will turn into adventurers as they set out to look for a slew of ‘checkpoints’ where they will receive a stamp. Once all eight stamps have been collected, there’s a little surprise. When they aren’t busy having fun in the sun, they can hang out at the kids club, PLAY where more fun awaits.

The resort classifies children’s age groups as the folowing:

Baby: under 2 years old
Child: 3 to 11 years old
Teen: 12 to 17 years old
