For seven consecutive years, Mount Lavinia Hotel has observed Earth Hour, a spectacle where all lights are turned off in public areas, and everyone enjoys dinner or a drink over candlelight instead. This international event is held in hopes of encouraging awareness about environmental harms, and coming together as a community, in darkness, to recognise that we must all come together to help solve the ecological crisis. But Mount Lavinia have gone beyond just one hour, by making it an entire evening focused on the celebration of nature and recognition of responsibility. Everything is done by candlelight for the evening, making it not only symbolic of sustainability, but undeniably romantic too.
Mount Lavinia Hotel supports many different community projects. This includes Planting of Trees – a local project where the local high schools take part in a re-wilding process and plant trees. As well as this, and providing conference and meeting space for local environmental meetings, as well as lectures given by visiting lecturers. The hotel also takes part in their own Kaduru Project. Kaduru seeds are planted at the hotel nursery, and once they have grown to the appropriate size they are used as decorations in and around the hotel, including guest rooms. Not only does this save costs, but it lessens the hotel’s carbon emissions. Once they grow even higher, they are taken from the hotel and planted on river banks to prevent soil erosion.
Mount Lavinia conducts many eco-friendly practices, such as measuring energy consumption, using low flow rate taps and showers, using recycled water in the water fountains, composting all green waste and using natural pesticides in the garden. Additionally, the hotel is working towards many achievements, recognising that eco-friendly lifestyles are ongoing processes. Also, importantly, more than 60% of the hotel’s staff are hired from the local area.
