Made in Moris

Priority is given to locally-sourced product to limit air pollution and water pollution and support the economy and local businesses. The resort partners “Made in Moris”, a local representative featuring all local companies producing products that pair with Shanti’s needs. Enhanced sea-to-table and farm-to-table selections are set in place to ensure fresh local products.

Shanti SEVA

In Hindi, SEVA means ‘selfless service’. The resort feels that there is endless potential to aid both the local people and the environment, and SEVA is all about serving selflessly and nurturing people, the community and environment. Below is a list of actions in place.

  • Continuous support to the nearby “Angel Special School” located in Chemin Grenier, for children with special needs.

  • Invitation extended to Angel Special School to the Shanti Maurice annual kids party: Each year, the resort hosts around 55 students and 5 teachers at an annual kids party. As an end of year gift, the kids are handed complimentary stationery & book vouchers which will help them in their studies.

  • Adopt the road concept: The resort contributes to the maintenance and care of the St Félix bus stop (next to the Hotel) and the St Félix roundabout, as well as 1km of the public road drains & its landscaping features.

  • Rivière Des Galets Social Plan 2021 (project in development): The coastal village of Riviere Des Galets is located in the south of Mauritius. According to the census 2017 (CSO), there are 97 households and the majority of the inhabitants earn their living through fishing or hotel jobs. The inhabitants do not have a good education level and very few of them have reached the tertiary level.

Objectives of the social plan:

  • The betterment of the fishermen society living in Rivière Des Galets
  • The community development and empowerment of the inhabitants of Rivière Des Galets. A number of other projects, currently under the planning phase, have been identified to help the local community
    to face their challenges.

  • Skipper training
  • Capacity building for fisherman
  • Swimming Zone creation at the public beach of St Félix
Energy Saving Practices
  • The food chiller, rated among the highest energy consumption, operates with a variator system which cuts off the chiller in relation to the occupancy level. This now saves energy when compared to other chillers.
  • Hot water from the chiller is recuperated to feed the boiler and therefore alleviate the gas consumption, limiting gas production and reducing air pollution.
  • Guest rooms are equipped with energy-saving key card holders which activate electricity when the magnetic key card is placed. Energy consumption is cut off in certain room areas when unoccupied, saving energy.
  • LED lighting is used across the resrot to save on electricity consumption.
  • The yard lighting is operated on a timer and adapts to the season.
  • A green energy team representative for electricity is assigned to monitor the usage readings on high consumption equipment and to report and take remedial action when excess use is found.
  • An electric car park station has been installed
  • To reduce and partner with low emission CO2 campaigns, all shuttle cars within the resort are electric
Water Management
  • The sewerage treatment plant (STP) is more advanced than traditional STPs. It has the capacity to collect and treat guests’ waste water, kitchen waste water and also the main pool’s back wash. The treated water is used for the landscaping irrigation.
  • Sensor-based urinals in the male lobby toilet and male staff toilet reduce water wastage.
  • The staff changing room sink is equipped with a sensor-based tap for the same reason.
  • There are water stations dotted across the resort, at the kids club, guest gym, spa, staff canteen and beach to enable guests to refill their water at leisure with complimentary reusable aluminium bottle.
Waste Management
  • All the green waste of biodegradable origin, from both the garden and kitchen, are processed through a composting cycle and used as organic mulches and soil improvers in the garden. This reduces the procurement of chemical fertilisers that are detrimental to the environment, as well as the transport needed to bring them.
  • All pruned ornamental plants are potted and the leftovers are sent to the in-house nursery where a yearly average of 7000 plants a year are grown.
  • The food waste follows a process cycle and is then donated to farmers and breeders for animals.
  • A monthly report is generated to measure and monitor the strict policies in line with the zero food wastage policy.
  • The creation of our herb garden see the resort cultivate its own fine herbs and vegetables. The menu is designed based on the available herbs and vegetables of the season.
  • To balance the ecosystem, pond fish have been introduced that feed on natural algae, thus keeping the pond clean and limiting the usage of chemicals.
  • Natural ducks have also been introduced to harmonise the natural pond. They are fed with leftover bread of the day to avoid wastage of unconsumed bread.
Coral Reef Conservation
  • The resort partners with the Reef conservation, an NGO organisation that monitors and protects the marine life of the lagoon. There is an in-house reef community team who takes the responsibility of creating awareness for the guests, colleagues and the local community of the importance of protecting the marine life. Lagoon monitoring and checks on the marine life are carried out yearly and a committee is held for corrective action.
  • Nautical activities in the sea are limited to non-motorised water sport activities to prevent the corals and oil spill in damaging them.
  • The resort has implemented a sea-to-fork concept where they favour local fisherman and support them by buying their line caught fish to use in their menu.
Plastic Free Concept

Following the new hygiene norms post COVID-19, the 100% plastic free concept is oriented towards disposable single use and biodegradable organic materials used in certain parts of the operational activity.

Shanti maurice bottles its own water under the international “VIVREAU” system which is on par with retail quality. This exercise heavily reduces the air pollution through truck delivery of water and a reduction in plastic bottles. Aluminium bottles are provided to staff and guests to enable safe consumption of water.
