Several initiatives are in place such as a non-invasive design of the resort so that the beauty of the island is not tainted. Bamboo, driftwood and native langhi leaves have all been used to construct the resort and it hopes to rely on renewable energy as its primary source within five years (from 2019). One of the resort’s other main goals is to operate without single-use plastic in favour of glass instead. Education is available to all guests to tour the powerhouse and the Emerald prides itself on its transparency.
“Operating under a ‘Think Green’ mentality has led Emerald resort to implement a host of eco-friendly initiatives. Solar panels are already being used at the resort in line with their aim to harness renewable energy. The resort offers sessions on marine protection with a resident marine biologist. Provided in this session is an introduction to the marine wildlife and their habitats. The coral reefs and their threats are taught to guests to educate people on the importance of their conservation. The resort is built in an area which was previously used for agriculture by local people. The staff ensure that this agriculture continues, growing their own vegetables to reduce air miles. Locals supply fresh fish, keeping in line with the resort’s plastic-free initiative and the staff ensure that food waste is converted into organic fertiliser with the presence of a composting facility on site. Transparency is important to allow guests to see that their holiday is in support of such important work.”
