Why Peru?

Peru is a country which is rich in history and scattered with ancient ruins and archaeological sites, signs of long lost civilisations – most notably the Incas and Machu Picchu – perhaps a land that time erased, but one that will never be forgotten. Waiting and ready to be explored are vibrant cities such as Cuzco, and stunning locations within the Andes and lowland jungles in the Amazon basin. Tradition is visible throughout Peru, with towns featuring craft markets selling alpaca wool and ornaments, and villagers wearing the local dress – Jabona (jackets) and ponchos made out of alpaca wool.

While Incas may be the most associated people with Peru it is important to acknowledge the empires which came before and helped pave the way for them – such as the Chimú Kingdom and Wari Empire. With no written language, all we know now about these empires has been discovered through explorative archaeological digs, with stone terraces used for agriculture and irrigation lasting the test of time and many being used for the same purpose today.

There is much to be discovered in Peru. While not often thought of, the mouth-watering cuisine is another reason to visit. Travel through the vibrant cities sampling tangy pisco sours, seafood ceviche, lomo saltado, cuy, pollo a la brasa, fiery chilli, Amazonian cocoa and corn tortillas to your heart’s content. Coffee is one of Peru’s biggest crops and even has a national day celebrated after it!

No trip to Peru would be complete without seeing a Peruvian Alpaca, which are easy to spot in the countryside, grazing in the fields and foothills. Llamas, chinchillas, and vicuña’s also call Peru their home as well as a wealth of flora and fauna which helps to make Peru a megadiverse country – holding 70% of the world’s biodiversity due to the varied topography.

The Sacred Valley is a magical mixture of lucious green rolling hills, lively rural markets and historical ancient ruins. Visit Machu Picchu – a UNESCO World Heritage Site found in the Sacred Valley – on a day trip, or choose a hiking trail which will lead you through villages to the top of the ancient citadel. When at the top be greeted with the well-known view over the ruins and the panoramic views across the cloud dotted hills and into the distance.

A country that holds much more than Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley, Peru is an excellent destination for all adventurers. Manu National Park holds one of the highest biodiversity rates in the whole world, and can be explored on foot or by canoe, floating down the gentle rivers. Lake Titicaca offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Famous for its man-made islands, the lake is one of the best places in Peru to meet the locals and learn about their traditions.

The rainbow mountain, Vinicunca, has to be seen to be believed. Rolling hills of multicolour rock awaits those who are fit enough to make the climb. With so much else on offer it is important not to forget Lima! The capital is bursting with culture and experiences to suit everyone, from grand architecture to interesting museums.
